I desperately wanted to champion Paul Schrader's prequel to The Exorcist, not least because his original vision blurred beyond all recognition after its Producers appointed a different Director (Renny Harlin, better known for action movies) to re-work the entire film as a commercial vehicle. The altered film was released as 'Exorcist - The Beginning' and is virtually unwatchable. This heartfelt attempt to release the original film is to be commended for the spirit and determination of Schrader (with the reluctant support of the studio, clearly facilitated by the commercial potential of DVD sales alone). However, with access to limited post-production resources the film is a shadow of its clear potential.
Schrader's intelligent film was to be an uncompromising observation of the nature of evil and redemption. Dominion provides a unique opportunity to observe what could have been, but ultimately it remains unsatisfying. So much compromise has left the heart and soul of the film ripped to pieces.
The success of The Exorcist was built upon its ability to completely unhinge your senses, an atmosphere that Schrader clearly set about duplicating with Dominion. Unfortunately the Studio failed to read his script and expected him to deliver 'horror action'. When the didn't get it they hired somebody they thought could deliver the goods (who predictably failed, miserably).
Dominion is a bizarre landmark in film history. If nothing else it provides an excellent case study for film students of the future.
I'm afraid that this is one of the worst films I've ever seen. We kept watching to the end out of sheer curiosity - would it improve, did it really mean to be this funny, etc.. In one scene, you can actually see the extras pretending to dig! They've obviously been given the direction to wave their pickaxes around, so they do...without making contact with any rocks or the ground.
