Frederic Raphael was among the writers who adapted Clifford Hanley's novel Love from Everybody for the screen, yet not even his eloquence could enliven a leaden romp that starts out smug and ends up tasteless. Considering he also produced the project, Richard Todd looks distinctly uncomfortable as the philandering travel agent who discovers, to girlfriend June Thorburn's horror, that all his European flirtations have arrived at his Edinburgh home at once. With sharper one-liners and pacier direction, this tacky tale could have been a reasonably entertaining bedroom farce, and thanks to Geoffrey Unsworth and Anne V Coates respectively, it has better photography and editing than it deserves.
An early dramatic role for Marilyn, playing a babysitter with serious problems. Richard Widmark falls for her charms but changes his mind when he realises she's nuts.
Recommended.
Marilyn is in disturbing form as Nell, an emotionally disturbed young woman employed by a rich couple to babysit their young daughter. This film just shows how Marilyn excelled in the dramatic roles that, regrettably, she was seldom given. Although a good actress, the fact Marilyn rarely received parts of this nature meant that she did not get the recognition she deserved.
