dull as ditchwater
By a customer from Stoke-on-Trent , 16 May 2010The only interesting thing about this film is the title which gives the misleading impression that there might be a build up of tension. This film is painfully slow with completely unsympathetic characters.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't touch the film
By a customer from Barnet , 03 Aug 2009THis is supposed to be a love story, just like a fellow review, I didn't get past half an hour. If you like your french films with actors standing around looking into space while looking ernest, then this is for you. I would not recommend this to anyone.- Was this review helpful to you?

The games people play
By Rehan (127 reviews) from London , 12 Jul 2009Did Balzac really create such profoundly annoying characters? I can't say, because I haven't read the novels, but though I usually quite like period films, this one takes the prize for being the very first that I got three-quarters of the way through (1'40') and just couldn't be bothered finishing.
The Duchesse de Langeais is supposedly a leader of society and a magical charmer: here, played by a haggard anorexic, she just cries out of a good smacking. The late Guillaume Depardieu doesn't do much better with his character either. Both are so tiresomely self-dramatising and overblown that you rapidly come to the point where you couldn't care less whether they live or die.
Some atrocious period inaccuracies (what looks like fluorescent light at evening parties, female band musicians, some seriously dodgy outfits and hopelessly misguided hair) make this tedious film tip the balance into the seriously unbearable. Avoid.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don`t bother
By jerym (34 reviews) from caerphilly uk , 02 Jun 2009Can`t recommend this I`m afraid far too long, ridiculously slow,on this showing Depardieu junior has a lot off catching up before he even approaches his dad and I lost interest in these people long before the end.Piccoli was the only good thing about the whole thing and he was`nt around for very long.- Was this review helpful to you?
