Lunatics take over the asylum again in an enchanting feel-good fable showcasing a masked Johnny Depp as the world's greatest lover on the verge of suicide. As a burnt-out shrink, Marlon Brando must prick the cod Casanova's fantasy bubble in therapy sessions — where his exaggerated Mexican past and hopelessly romantic conquests are revealed in mythic flashback — or have him committed. Instead, through Depp's grandiose, poetic delusions, Brando re-examines the importance of passion in his own marriage to Faye Dunaway. A scintillating lyrical tone and magical realism make director Jeremy Leven's film a wonderfully funny, touching odyssey through a red-hot landscape of Latin rhythms, virile Valentinos, swooning senoritas and duelling Zorros.
"Iconoclastic acting of a high order by three eccentric performers....With special accolades to Brando, who here renders yet another magnificent 'comeback' performance..."
As you sit back and watch this enchanting parable about a delusional man who thinks he's don Juan de Marco, the greatest lover in the world you are sure of one thing...there is no-one alive who could be more believable in the role than Johnny Depp.
As the women swoon around him, you do not get the feeling they are acting in any way whatsoever. However Depp does not just look good, he brings an emotional intensity and a magnetism that lifts this film above the usual light frothy fair. Marlon Brando is perfectly cast as his psychiatrist whose own romanticism is awoken by Don Juan's tales of love and lust. Faye Dunaway is also provides excellent support as Brando's wife who is the recipient of her husband's re-awoken passion.
After witnessing magical tales of sultans, sword fights and undying love you will finish this film feeling as inspired and passionate as the characters whose lives are changed by Depp's don Juan.
Loved it. How can anyone not love this romantic, feel-good film about happy-ever-afters?
And to boot there's Johnny Depp at his gorgeous best and Marlon Brando looking as though he's loving the project...What more can you ask? An excellent night spent in.
