Lunatics take over the asylum again in an enchanting feel-good fable showcasing a masked Johnny Depp as the world's greatest lover on the verge of suicide. As a burnt-out shrink, Marlon Brando must prick the cod Casanova's fantasy bubble in therapy sessions — where his exaggerated Mexican past and hopelessly romantic conquests are revealed in mythic flashback — or have him committed. Instead, through Depp's grandiose, poetic delusions, Brando re-examines the importance of passion in his own marriage to Faye Dunaway. A scintillating lyrical tone and magical realism make director Jeremy Leven's film a wonderfully funny, touching odyssey through a red-hot landscape of Latin rhythms, virile Valentinos, swooning senoritas and duelling Zorros.
"Iconoclastic acting of a high order by three eccentric performers....With special accolades to Brando, who here renders yet another magnificent 'comeback' performance..."
A dashingly romantic, modern-day variation on the old swashbuckling movies, enabling audiences to enjoy the fantasy while it is being explained away.
As you sit back and watch this enchanting parable about a delusional man who thinks he's don Juan de Marco, the greatest lover in the world you are sure of one thing...there is no-one alive who could be more believable in the role than Johnny Depp.
As the women swoon around him, you do not get the feeling they are acting in any way whatsoever. However Depp does not just look good, he brings an emotional intensity and a magnetism that lifts this film above the usual light frothy fair. Marlon Brando is perfectly cast as his psychiatrist whose own romanticism is awoken by Don Juan's tales of love and lust. Faye Dunaway is also provides excellent support as Brando's wife who is the recipient of her husband's re-awoken passion.
After witnessing magical tales of sultans, sword fights and undying love you will finish this film feeling as inspired and passionate as the characters whose lives are changed by Depp's don Juan.
This film makes me wonder whether there were any other contenders for playing the part of Don Juan de Marco as the part seems to have been written for Johnny Depp. The film has just about the right balance of sensuality and romanticism with a touch of nonchalant comedy at just the right places.
It also makes you think about whether living in reality is the best thing. After all, some fantasy in life might just be what we need to forget our cynicysm and rediscover our humanity. It is quite bittersweet, as the fantasy world Depp's character constructs for himself is like a dream, yet the harsh reality leads him to be incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital.
I would recommend "Benny and Joon" to anybody who enjoyed this film, another sweet performance from Johnny Depp.
Johnny Depp at his sexiest. Absolutely enchanting as the story drifts between reality and fantasy. Romance in a nutshell.

...I first saw this on TV a few years ago, purely by chance, and had fond memories of it, so decided to rent it again. I enjoyed it just as much the second time around.
The movie's sentiment is inspiring and it's a real feel-good movie. Highly recommended.

A delightful heart warming film with Johnny Depp's performance being impressive as ever. The film explores the thin line between madness and reality when Depp's character claims to be the Don Juan de Marco. As he hears these impressive stories of his new patient's past loves and conquests the psychiatrist (Brando) starts to look at his own life and marriage as he faces the prospect of retirement. Very well acted on both parts and rich in imagery. A must for all Johnny Depp fans!
Loved it. How can anyone not love this romantic, feel-good film about happy-ever-afters?
And to boot there's Johnny Depp at his gorgeous best and Marlon Brando looking as though he's loving the project...What more can you ask? An excellent night spent in.
Delightful, Charming and provocative. I loved this film from start to finish, captivated by superb performances from Depp and Brando. Depp insisted that Brando star opposite him and when Brando agreed to play the psychiatrist Depp signed up. Don Juan de Marco is not your typical romantic film, even though it is helped along by a beautiful soundtrack it'smore of a gentle storytelling fantasy concocted by Depp's character. It doesn't take long for Don Juan to creep into Brando's life when he starts to pay his wife more attention. There is an obvious chemistry between Brando and Depp which helps keep the movie moving along at a steady pace. The dvd itself is poor and give the extras 0/5 as there aren't any, sound is in Dolby Pro Logic only.
Best summed up by: very silly
Sad to see Marlon Brando degrading himself in such a foolish role, and really, does Johnny Depp ever produce anything of note??? Pretty he may be, but his choice of films are, more often than not, absolutely pants, and when not, he really doesn't have the acting capability to carry them off with any depth or momentum (compare him to the original 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' for example). In Pirates of the Caribbean he looked, rather than acted, the role....doesn't anyone else see that King Johnny isn't wearing much clothing...???
Anyway, back to the film - again, somebody (maybe) could have made a meal of the idea, but not I think this time around.
If you like Johnny Depp this is the film for you! Not only does he look incredible, he also plays one of his best roles to date. Definately one for the ladies!
Excellent - sweet, poignant, and some good smiles. Nice to see Brando in a non-mob, mumbling role. Very definitely recommended.
If you love Depp then you'll love this movie, his acting is enigmatic and he brings the character to life, makes for compulsive viewing
