I felt let down by this version. I love the ballet and I love Rudolph, he was the best thing in it, bless him. It was the filming of it I didn't like, and the music didn't sound as good as it does on the Baryshnikov version. I know it was filmed a long time ago so made allowances for it, but I have to confess I didn't enjoy it as much as the other version with Mikhail Baryshnikov and the American Ballet.- Was this review helpful to you?

Hardly Cervantes
By onebadgewriter (82 reviews) from Buckhurst Hill, Essex , 10 May 2008In fact there's more to do with Nureyev's spirited portrayal of the womanising barber than the poor deluded Don, portrayed by Helpmann - the former at his most skilled and exciting dancing (and with surprising great humour in the role) and the latter seemingly relegated (after such a brilliant on- and off-stage career) to some geriatric-like movements either on foot or an equally geriatric horse.
However, this doesn't mean the production is not enjoyable - the village square is alive with a very colourful, agreeable chorus, excellent solos etc., several well-presented characters - and a windmill, of course. All together it's an ambitious romp and very pleasant viewing. How ambitious you will realise when you watch the bonus feature on the making of the film. That is an absolute must.- Was this review helpful to you?
