In this lesser-known opera of Donizetti, which is a quite a serious match for an opera by Verdi in the same genre, Joan Sutherland demonstrates her singing quailities she is deservedly famous for: a facility of tone production that never tires or becomes harsh in any register. James Morris as a rather leonine-looking Henry also gives a very impressive performance whose crisp diction and mahogany-like tone creates a convincingly tyrannical king. Great support in the other roles and this classic production has withstood the test of time excellently.
