This is a truly wonderful production and I shall buy the DVD.

All the voices are superb but Rolando Villazon is outstanding and his acting is hugely funny and poignant, too. The chorus work is lively, the sets colourful and the direction excellent. An added bonus is being able to share the enthusiasm of the Vienna audience, with an encore for Rolando Villazon and a standing ovation at the end.

It's breath-taking and I can say no more in praise of this production; you will have to see and hear it for yourself. What I will say is that I made the mistake of paying £25 for the Met. New York's HD internet transmission of Gounod's Romeo et Juliette. The sound was awful, the chorus stodgy, the direction weak and the atmosphere non-existent, with one of the performers pulling faces into the camera lens back-stage. It's the last time I will pay £25 for a cinema seat for such rubbish! It's a rip-off by the New York Metropolitan Opera and I recommend everybody to rent this delightful production instead.

  • The best Elixir to date

    Rated - 5.0 stars

There is no doubt that this is the best 'Elixir' on offer to date. The two top stars are at their height in the opera world, and were obviously enjoying this production of one the top operas. I already have two versions of the opera and was drawn to this disc by the inclusion of the Russian soprano. Although i had my doubts about Nucci, as I imagine a younger man for a soldier, but he is excellent. This production being both funnier than some and vocally of high standard deserves a blu ray version. It is the only disc I have seen recently with the tenor repeating an aria, and there is a very passionate kiss near the end. Recommended highly.

  • Great Acting poor audio

    Rated - 2.5 stars

I am a huge fan of Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villason and was looking forward to being able to give this a 5 Star review. On the positive side the acting of the pair was extremely good however the audio quality even on PCM Stereo let this version down for me. I tried it on surround sound and it was even worse. I found I had to wind the volume up very high when compared to other DVD's I watch.

I also found Villason's rendition of Una furtiva lagrima to be weak and lacklustre when compared to versions by Pavarotti, Domingo, Bjoerling. I know the audience loved it giving him a tremendous reception and encore, but I just did not see (hear) it myself.

I'm pleased I rented this and di not go and buy it.

  • Great fun

Donizetti's Elixir has everything, from great patter songs to moving melodies, and an - almost - believable plot. This is a splendidly sung and acted performance of a long standing production, with fine period costumes and set. Villazon sings well and gives a believable partially Harpo Marx inspired performance; Netrebko manages the transformation from disdain to love well and D'Arcangelo is splendid as the quack doctor.

  • One star off for design

The voices are just sublime, what a combination - and great to see an encore for Villazon 'stop the show', bringing the DVD viewer a little of the feeling of seeing it live.

I knocked one star off for Vienna's rather cliched design. Frankly, I think Scottish Opera's recent production was better in that regard.

  • A match made in heaven

The casting of Netrebko and Villazon in Donietti's high-spirited romp is inspired. Both in terms of vocal quality and acting skill they wipe the floor with the rest of the cast, who come over as nothing more than caricatures. Most enjoyable.
