I never saw Joan Sutherland in the flesh but certainly on record I find her Lucia far less intense than either the Beverley Sills or Maria Callas interpretations. Sadly she proves to be the major drawback of this DVD as although even as late as 1983 her voice is as steady & secure as ever the absence of any form of acting ability makes this quite difficult to watch. In an opera house one may be shielded from inappropriate facial expressions & acting that would look inappropriate in a high school production- one isn't on DVD.
Kraus is superb in every way- his refusal to 'sell out' has led him to be ranked below the Pavarottis & Carreras' of this world- but the beauty of his voice & elegance of phrasing are a model. The rest of the cast are at least adequate. Being a Met production it is 'traditional'- the opera is as the author imagined it not the vehicle for some hare-brained producer. Sadly it is cut- the Wolf's Glen scene is missing & most of the other stage cuts in ensembles are preserved. We get a foreshortened version of the act II bass/soprano duet 'Cedi Cedi'.
