Donnie Brasco
By wolfenchild (5 reviews) from Croydon, England , 04 Feb 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Donnie Brasco centers around the true story of FBI Agent, Joseph D. Pistone, played by Johnny Depp, who infiltrates the mafia of New York, by befriending Benjamin 'Lefty' Ruggerio (Al Pacino) under the moniker of Donnie Brasco. He gets himself in with the mafia faction led by Sonny Black (Michael Madsen), and finds himself falling in deeper and deeper as the group hit the big time. This puts Donny at conflict, putting a strain on his marriage, but unable to walk away lest Lefty pays the price.
Donnie Brasco is probably one of the best mob films I've seen since The Godfather and Scarface. Johnny Depp delivers a convincing perfomance as a mobster, but also a man who is at conflict with himself, his family, his friends but most of all his conscience, showing once again Depp's versatility as an actor. Also Al Pacino delivers arguarbly one of his best perfomances, showing Lefty to be a character who is strong, loyal and yet vulnerable. And of all the characters, Lefty is the one you feel for the most.
As Brasco delves deeper and deeper into the crime syndicate, the more intense the storyline becomes and the more you feel for the particpants. And the fact that it is based on a true story makes it all the more compelling.
When people mention mob films, the first they say are The Godfather, and Scarface. But Donnie Brasco definitely deserves to be mentioned too.

Why can't I love this movie?
By Kusanagiguy (101 reviews) from London , 29 Mar 2012I enjoyed it but I didn't love it
There are a great many films that people rave about as instant classics and it always burns me that I can't love the film in the same way. Donnie Brasco is one such film.
everything in the film works, it's well shot, well acted (Pacino before his choices became suspect) and keeps your interest but once it was over I had no desire to ever watch it again.
For me there are better mob flicks out there and personally I found the overuse of 'forget about it' rather irritating.
I don't know if it was overhype of mobster fatigue but Brasco wasn't for me (I'm actually quite sad about that)- Was this review helpful to you?

Worth seeing just for the final few minutes of the last scene
By a customer , 10 Sep 2011This isn't my favourite Pacino film (probably because he does very little shouting and I love it when he does those long shouting monologues in other films !!) but it's a real gem of a gangster film. What I have always loved about Depp is that he is so versatile. He has refused to get type-cast and here for the first time we see him in a double act as FBI agent and mobster all-in-one. Pacino is perfect for mob films, but here we see, yet again, his amazing talent as an actor. He isn't playing the tough guy here, but the guy who gets used by the big mob bosses to do their dirty work. He says he has killed 26 people and we know it's not because he really wanted to, but because he had. The final scene is pure Pacino heaven for me. Long live Depp & Pacino !- Was this review helpful to you?
