Wonderfully ambitious movie
By Aman1 from Middlesex , 10 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
So much has been said about this film already, but after seeing it I felt compelled to add my thoughts on the movie.
It is ridiculously ambitious, and this is part of what makes this movie so charming. From talk of time travel to presidential propaganda, this film is filled with social commentary and cinematic brilliance. The film has far more memorable scenes than in most films, from the hilarious Smurf conversation to Donnies hypnotherapy sessions.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Donnie brilliantly, portraying Donnie with self-depreciatory humour, a real sense of vulnerability and astute intelligence. His thoughts on God are a definite highlight.
Patrick Swayze is fantastically hilarious in his role as a saviour from fear figure, and adds a lot of colour to the movie. Noah Wyle and Drew Barrymore also provide enjoyable cameos. However, it is the overbearing dance-leader and backward thinking teacher who stirs the emotion in most viewers. She seems to represent Conservative America, and Donnie wonderfully exposes her simplicity when she gives her teaching on love.
Donnies relationship with the new girl in town is refreshingly complex and understated, and adds something to the film when it so easily could have taken away from it.

Amazing, Complex and Weird
By a customer , 07 Apr 2013The films plot alone was incredible and intriguing but the complexity that was put into the film really helped as the film wouldn't have worked as well without all the strange confusion.- Was this review helpful to you?

New-Wave Cult
By a customer , 27 Mar 2013Possibly the most admirable thing about Donnie Darko is how well it conveys the director, Richard Kelly's love and nostalgia for both: + Old Cult cinema with a sci-fi theme, such as Dune and Blade Runner. +Guilty Pleasure Flicks, such as Stand By Me and Big Weekend (meets Rebel Without A Cause). Kelly's combination of these two, polar-opposite genres is bizarre and extremely succesful. The elements of bleak, noir film are contrasted beautifully with the occasional wry gag. You could get philosophical about the meaning of the film, but for me, what's important is the care that was put into the ultimately flawed story, and the overall mood of the picture. And it is very moody.- Was this review helpful to you?

Totally pointless
By shannenlc (2 reviews) , 07 Mar 2013I decided to watch this film, as a friend had told me it was a real thriller with an amazing twist but I have to say I was extremely disappointed. Throughout the film I was very unclear what happened, but eventually started to feel that I knew what was going on. However as the movie continued it was quite clear that my idea was incorrect and I was totally lost. I expected everything to be cleared up at the end of the film, but nope. I was left totally confused and had to look up an explanation to even understand what had happened. After reading the explanation it all made sense and fit into place and it seems to be a very interesting compelling story. However I don't see the point in watching a movie if the story is so unclear that you have to Google it. Therefore I find it extremely pointless and overall a waste of time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent, original film.
By ianinini (5 reviews) , 16 Jan 2013I think this film is great. It is really well acted and really original. You'll probably only like it if you like unusual films. This far from a mainstream blockbuster. It leaves you wondering what it all meant... but if you read spoilers on-line afterwards you can make sense of it all. That's what we did. Apparently the directors cut explains more. I'm guessing I would have enjoyed that more. The standard version seemed to go pretty quickly!- Was this review helpful to you?
