Eighteen number-one hits make Diana Ross the most successful female recording artist of all time. Her movie career pales in comparison, although she did receive an Oscar nod for Lady Sings the Blues back in 1972. Here she stars with teen sensation Brandy (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer), a pretender to her crown. Ross is Olivia, a struggling lounge singer who abandons daughter Kayla (Brandy) to pursue her showbiz dream. Flash forward 18 years, and Olivia is now a massive star to whom Kayla — ignorant of her origins and just embarking on her own warbling career — goes to for advice. Fans will enjoy the tunes, but the creaking melodrama is less attractive.
Diana Ross Fan? Then this is your film.
A very emotional but beautiful film with some of Diana's (as always) fantastic songs from her Album in 1999. Also Brandy both great performers. A hit with me.
The restraints of making a film expressly for TV are all too evident in DOUBLE PLATINUM, a glossy tale of a successful singer (ROSS) getting to know the daughter she abandoned 18 years earlier (BRANDY).
The star presence of both ladies (together with numerous musical numbers) lifts the movie above many others of its kind. Although it is unlikely to find an audience away from the stars' fanabses, DOUBLE PLATINUM is an entertaining tale of mother/daughter bonding.
