..but as near perfect a set of performances as we could hope for. A gripping drama which prompts lots of questions afterwards and allows scope for alternative explanations, Doubt after all being the name of the movie. For me the screenplay didn't always seem true, but the cast made that all but irrelevant and for fans of Meryl Streep (who isn't?) you won't be disappointed. Brad (sorry, Philip, but for me you will always be Lebowski's butler) was also outstanding, but perhaps the best performance of all was the utterly convincing Amy Adams.
for a thoughtful, thought provoking and intriguing film, as far removed from the usual Hollywood hokum as it is possible to get. No reams of special effects, no exotic locations, no Tom Hanks, no mawkish sentimentality and no covert 'messages'. Just a well-plotted film, superbly acted by all involved, which doesnt have a nicely wrapped up ending, but one which leaves you as full of 'Doubt' as the characters themselves. Did he? Didnt he? After the intensely moving scene with the boy's mother, should we care if he did? Can all those we look up to be trusted?
Streep is at the top of her game here, playing a villan no less heartless and terrifying than Cruella de Vil herself, who ranges herself on the side of Good but who cannot be completely trusted to be objective. Amy Adams fights hard for her place in the spotlight and proves herself a winner.
Great, intelligent, gripping film.

It means Streep, who received a Best Actress nomination at the 2009 ceremony for Doubt, is favourite to pick up her third Academy Award next February (10). An... Read more
