This box-office smash hit provided Nick Nolte with a choice comic role, and he makes the most of it. But there's something a shade too frantic and nervy about the film's pace and the performances of Bette Midler and Richard Dreyfuss as the nouveau riche Beverly Hills couple who find themselves giving house room to Nolte's hobo. Some very funny set pieces, usually involving the family dog, and the occasional unerring spotlight on snobbery make it a movie worth watching, but it's not a patch on the classic French original Boudu Saved from Drowning.
Somewhat bumbling but sporadically effectiverehash of Renoir's Boudu Sauvé des Eaux (qv), with a few modern jabs and effectively eccentric performances.

Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws) and Nick Nolte (48 Hours) are very good in this film. not the best I have seen them but enjoyable stuff. Maybe not as funny i thought it was the first time i saw this film but still enjoyable. My 18 year old daughter enjoyed it, again not the funniest film she had seen but then this is preety dated in comparison with todays comedy films. Certainly sends up Beverly Hills lifestyles a little. If you want a gentle comedy with a few laughs and a good ending then give it a watch. Oh and the dog, well cute dog!
This is an excellent film depicting the angst among a dysfunctional family who have too much money and not enough sense. This all changes when they take in the homeless Nolte who fuels some of their problems and solves others. Dreyfuss is superb as usual and although its very lightweight and indicative of the era it rises above the junk churned out in the 80s
I really enjoyed this movie. With an excellent story-line, amazing acting and very funny moments, this movie will keep you entertained throughout. This is a movie that can be watched again and again.
As a Bette Midler fan, I have a habit of renting any DVD I can find with her in it. I have seen most of her films and this was one of the last few I hadn't seen. It's an average comedy, with some funny parts and some just plain strange parts....but what can we say...it was the 80's!!! Bette Midler as always injects a bit of fiestyness and is her usual diva self. Richard Dreyfuss doesn't play too badly in it. And Nick Nolte played his part well. A must see for all Bette fans - although not enough of her in it !!!! One of those films you sit and watch in your pj's when u've nothing else to do....but not one you'd bother to go out and buy.
If you are a fan of Bette Midler films, then this is a must see comedy with Nick Nolte, Richard Dreyfuss, Bette Midler and of course the dog of the household.
Watch as a hobo tramps life is transformed and see how he transforms other people's lives especially Batiste the dog.
