Purile, Tasteless... completely magnificent!!!!
By Martin Fletcher from Blackpool , 12 Oct 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
If you laughed like a drain at Deuce Bigalo, snort like a pig when you watch scary movie, love Airplane or Police Squad, give this a go.
Kelsey Grammer is given his own command of a submarine, but Bruce Dern's Admiral character is not a fan and tries to stitch up KC with a crew of no-hopers on an decrepid diesel sub.
Ensue the David vs Goliath fight as Grammer takes on the might of the US Navy in an naval exercise to keep his captain-ship.
Ubiquitous fart jokes, (hinted at) knob-jokes and and snappy one-liners, just sit with the kids and laugh your bum off.
The electrician character can do an absolutely amazing impersonation of Frank Sinatra.. (don't ask)...
Anyway, my wife is sick of me watching this......

(19)Humour Runs Deep
By pedro01 (10 reviews) from Wallasey , 07 Oct 2009As an ex-submariner I thoroughly enjoyed this hilarious comedy. Submarines is a genre of film that is somewhat limited to the confines of one location (i.e. the boat itself) so the story lines are similarly of necessity limited too. Most of the possible scenarios have already been visited in other comedies such as 'Operation Petticoat' etc making the task finding somethiing novel even harder.
Top marks to the makers for finding something different in their approach to making this movie. Great performance from Kelsey Grammar as a nuclear-trained submarine executive officer who is 'reluctantly' given by the US Admiralty the command of an old diesel submarine of WWII vintage that is virtually a rusting hulk. His crew as a bunch of navy scalliwags and reprobates that have been literally press-ganged into joining the boat leave a lot to be desired too. This unlikely mix provides for some very funny scenes and riotous situations.
Excellent acting support comes from Bruce Dern and Rip Torn as warring Admirals, and also from William H. Macey and Harry Dean Stanton making this a gem of a comedy.- Was this review helpful to you?
