Down To Earth

Comedian Chris Rock updates 1978's HEAVEN CAN WAIT with a decidedly modern flair in this romantic comedy. Lance Barton (Rock) is a struggling comedian whose dream is to perform at New York City's legendary Apollo Theater before it closes its doors forever. One night, while riding his bike, Lance is crushed by an enormous truck. Before he can come to terms with what has happened, he is strolling through Heaven, talking to the smooth Mr. King (Chazz Palminteri) and the bumbling Keyes (Eugene Levy), the angel who prematurely snatched Lance away from Earth. Mr. King agrees to make up for this mistake by returning Lance to New York, only instead of being a black bike messenger, Lance is now Mr. Wellington, a powerful white businessman who just so happens to be the enemy of Sontee (Regina King), the woman he has become infatuated with. Wooing Sontee with a new commitment to using Mr. Wellington's money philanthropically, Lance embarks on a mission to perform at the Apollo, even if he doesn't seem to fit the mold. But just when everything begins to fall into place, Mr. King returns to throw another glitch into Lance's plans. Coasting along on the charm of Rock and King, DOWN TO EARTH is a charming story about the power of fate, set to a bouncing hip-hop soundtrack.

Robert Montgomery and Warren Beatty played the dead guys who came back from beyond in other people's bodies in the two earlier versions of this hardy Hollywood perennial, Here Comes Mr Jordan (1941) and Heaven Can Wait (1978). Third time round it's rising black comic Chris Rock who's “reincarnated”, as an unfunny stand-up comedian is taken before his time and has to be returned to earth by Mr King (Chazz Palminteri, playing God's right-hand man like a Mafia consiglieri). Trouble is, the comedian's original body has been cremated, and the only readily available alternative has just been vacated by a fat-cat white businessman who's been bumped off by his wife and her lover. Rock tries hard — too hard at times. But both he and the film lack the charm of their predecessors. Also, Rock doesn't yet have true leading-man charisma. He remains better suited to spunky sidekick turns where he has someone to spark off, as he did against Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop II and, more recently, against Morgan Freeman in Nurse Betty. Down to Earth isn't a bad film. Chris Rock fans will probably quite like it. But this cross-race retread underachieves in most departments, bringing Mr Rock's leading-man ambitions back down to earth with a bang.

    • Radio Times
  • Feeble comedy that wastes Rock's talents and does not compare to the two earlier versions of the same story; it lacks finesse and style.

    Chris Rock Rocks!!

What a fantastically hilarious remake of the film "Heaven Can Wait". I think Chris Rock is a wonderful actor/comedian, an up and coming Will Smith. I hope Warren Beatty is proud of his successor.

I saw this video on the shelf when it first came out and have been wanting to watch it! I am not normally a great fan of Chris Rock, but this was really good, and funny and slushy, it just goes to show you shouldn't judge people by what they look like!
