  • Fascinating, but overly long ...

Bruno Ganz pulls off an unbelievably realistic and gripping portrayal of Adolf Hitler, and his final years as leader of Nazi Germany. Set in an underground bunker in Berlin, Downfall tells the story of the events which followed the Soviet onslought on the city, and the reaction of Hitler and his fellow Nazi officers to the impending collapse of their city. Some horrifying moments make the audience sit up and pay attention, but I found Downfall slightly dragging at times, and a distinct lack of a protagonist (excluding Hitler's secretary Traudl, who is caught in the middle of the terrible occurences), meant there were moments when I wished the Soviet soldiers would hurry up and kill them. Overall though, definately worth a watching solely because of Ganz's portrayal of Hitler, and an insight into the few defining moments which led to the collapse of one of history's greatest evils.

  • Hitler: A Human Being

Fantastic, Bruno Ganz' portrayal of Hitler is astounding he manages to show a human side to the man without detracting from his obvious evil. Everything about this film feels genuine and transports you to the 1940's. The desperation of the German people in those final days is palpable. This is not a lazy film that relies on stereotypes or propaganda but one that actually seeks to portray some truth's and Trudl Junge' endorsements add yet more credence to an already convincing film. A must watch for WW2 scholars.

Great film brilliantly acted by Bruno Gantz. As an actor he has a head start as he is a Hitler 'look alike' but he portrays the evil/callousness mixed with the vegetarian animal and child lover to a tee!

  • Historically accurate, dramatically effective

A brilliant depiction of Hitler's last days which manages to be accurate (as far as we can tell from the sources) and dramatically effective. Several characters come to life vividly - for example, Eva Braun confessing in her last moments with a girlish giggle that she hates Hitler's dog and kicks it sometimes when the Fuehrer isn't looking! Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler is riveting, and dares to show him as having at least some humanity. The film creates a wonderful sense of the tense, claustrophibic atmosphere in the bunker, the gradual realisation that the Russians are going to take Berlin, and the insane fanaticism of those who would rather die than face a world without National Socialism. Magda Goebbels poisoning her own children is poignant and chilling. It's long, but I don't think anything shorter could have done the subject justice.

  • Justice for the Nazis.

This is as real an account of the last days in the bunker as you could ever imagine. Ganz is so good as Hitler that you think it is him. The cast support the main character so well that what you are watching you believe. 90% of this movie is in the bunker with 10% left for some memorable action sequences outside.

This is a great movie; I did not love it as the subject matter could never inspire love.

This is a harrowing telling of what went on, grim to watch in parts and that’s an understatement. There were times that I felt pity for the Nazis.

Having Hitler’s real secretary do an intro and a summing up, of her real thoughts, at the end give the movie a credence no filmmaker could ever do.

Over the years I have watched this 3 times. Everyone should see it once. I would not want to see it again.

Be warned, you will not be left on a high.
