Exceeded expectations
By itsdi (2 reviews) , 07 Sep 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Having missed this on TV and hearing about the rave reviews, I rented Series 1.
It lived up to and exceeded my expectations. The story lines upstairs/downstairs are wonderful as is the acting but Maggie Smith steals the show with her barbed comments and 'one liners'.
The location/ costumes are sumptuous too and I absolutely loved it and am waiting for series 2 to drop through my letter box as we speak (type) :-)- Was this review helpful to you?

(8)An expensive bore
By satwalker99 (19 reviews) from CHATHAM , 03 Jun 2013Couldn't find time to catch its tv run so waited for the DVD set. Clearly an expensive and lengthy undertaking by lots of serious & dedicated people but for me it lacked the entertainment & scope of 'Upstairs,Downstairs' of Eaton Sq. I stuck through the first 5 episodes & postponed the rest. I found it generally humourless, lacking the sensitivity & characterization of its counterpart and difficult to follow in parts mainly because I knew only Maggie Smith of the cast of strangers. Certainly the acting was highly professional and the settings enviable with the costumes -or more accurately, period dresses so appropriate. A great deal of planning and care in the production was evident. But where was the real drama and suspense in the few twists of any plot? Ir is possible that a special clique of wealthy landed gentry once occupied such vast & isolated estates while butlers, footmen & scullery maids once saw this as their life's calling. I'm afraid 'Upstairs & Down' was more fun and anyway, its cast was generally well known of old. 3/5- Was this review helpful to you?

British period drama at its best
By LeightonBrook-Alders (1 review) , 06 Mar 2013I have missed all the series on TV. I thought I would hate it but ended up absolutely loving it - the attention to detail in the exquisite sets and costumes is amazing. And the way the writers build the characters is compelling - can't wait for the next series- Was this review helpful to you?

I absolutely loved it
By Panna (55 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 17 Feb 2013What a fantastic period drama extravaganza. The location, the costumes, the characters were fabulous. One of the previous reviewers thought it 'kind of dreary'....not at all. It portrays the lives of people above and below stairs and how similar they are in the real context of life, if you ignore the trappings of society, the nuts and bolts of life and what it means to us humans.
An absolute gem of a production and I can't wait for the next instalment.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent Period Drama
By a customer , 04 Jan 2013Missed the first series so watched this retrospectively in order to put the subsequent series in context. This first series was excellent. The location, the costumes and the characters were well researched and thought through and combined with the social and political influences of the time made for some excellent story-lines enabling these episodes to lay the foundation for what was guaranteed to be a successful period drama. The individual and master-servant relationships and the consequential co-dependency on one with the other created a community within the wider community that gave a fascinating insight into the characters and lives of those living in stately homes at the time.- Was this review helpful to you?
