Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. Sean Connery was just 32 years old when he won the role of Agent 007. In his first adventure .. Read more

The first turned out to be the best. Although undoubtedly suave and sophisticated, there was an edge to 007 in this film that kept faith with Fleming's character as written in the novels, an edge which was progressively lost as the series of films developed, to such an extent that in later years Bond was almost camp! Sean Connery excelled in the role and the Director's introduction of Bond to the screen audience remains amongst the most memorable screen moments. Picture the card table in the casino and the use of the camera to pan around to reveal Connery's face for the first time as he delivers the immortal words 'Bond ... James Bond' in the feline manner that only he could ooze. Pure magic ! Roger Moore et al could not have captured that moment. And all that before you consider Ursula Andress' arrival on the beach !
This is a good movie. It feels a little primitive compared to Thunderball (and the later ones) but its a solid film and good entertainment. The best bond films are the early ones with Sean Connery. The stories are more believable and less over the top. And Connery set the standard for Bond, which I don't think has been matched by any of his successors I have to say.
The ending is a bit of an anti-climax but let us not complain too much.
Really wish Tesco wouldn't send the 'bonus' disk and waste one of my choices.
Really wish Tesco wouldn't send the 'bonus' disk and waste one of my choices.
The first Bond film is a classic thriller which set up all the revolutionary parameters that have long since become clichéd; the sexy girl, the suave secret agent, the megalomaniacal, physically-deformed villain, the high-tech secret base, all that stuff.
What makes this among the best of the series, though, is its low-key atmosphere; without the bigger budgets of the following installments, it creates an intimate, more immediate sense of danger, and eschews big, bombastic set-pieces for a gripping adventure laced with intrigue.

As with most movies the first ones take some beating and though Sean Connery went on to make a set of excellent Bond Movies, Dr No certainly stands out.

Sad isn't it.. You can almost get into the sixties ambience of Bond in the first third of the film, the setup, the set pieces; then we have a bit of entanglement and 'where are we going to?' in the middle, (fatally flawed by Ursula Andress as the most implausible and improbable wet ( a pun on the level of the film) character you could ever imagine, even the emergence from the sea isn't quite as iconic as you thought when you see it in context. Then the nonsense rigmarole of the finale. In the end, a film that's better just as a poster.
I thought this was the most wonderful nostalgic tosh! Absolutely great. Dated, but such fun. Such things as the scene in which Ursula Andress emerges from the sea, would simply not happen in that way today. She would be wearing (almost) something unimaginably skimpy, which would be forcibly removed by James. .; . enough already! I really enjoyed my trip down memory lane. What a shame therefore that I forgot to cancel the following 'special feature'. Can't be doing with it. It all gets far too serious. It is a game; let's leave it there.
A brilliant display by Sean Connery, A good plot and excellent action to this film, The one film I have never seen before,But it was worth seeing in the end.
another bond classic sean connery is just brilliant worth watching
This is the first of the James Bond series of films and stars, some say, the best JB - Sean Connery.
Unlike the later fims this one relies less upon special effects. Having said that, this is a very well made film and Connery slips smoothly onto 007's role from the outset.
A very enjoyable and entertaining film - then there's Ursula Andress.
