A black comedy of unequalled bodily fluidsBy Nathanael from West Midlands , 09 Apr 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]Dr Strangelove or; How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (to give it its full title) is one of the greatest oddball, black comedies ever made, with spot on performances by all the cast (of worthy note is the finest comedy performance that Slim Pickens ever gave. Whilst under the impression that this was a serious war drama).
This is a film with characters so real in their absurdity that you cannot help but believe that they do exist. The comedy is perfectly pitched, with Sellers giving three of the finest performances of his career, as well as a satirical view of society and the paranoia which it let itself be controlled by (and still does).
However, in this modern world some of the exaggerated characters dont seem quite as exaggerated and absurd as perhaps they once did. And that makes it all the more effective.

Satirical classic you must watchBy Ilovefilmslots (66 reviews) , 03 Oct 2013You shouldn't be turned off by the age of this film. It is a satirical dark comedy that justifiably ranks in any list of best films. It is set at the height of the Cold War and deliciously recounts the ludicrous nature of a war cabinet in the countdown to nuclear war. The scripted political innuendo is bang on the money whilst the acting is so good as to almost be criminal. The best of it is the way that the way it portrays the idiocy of politicians in a timeless manner. I could see the lead character lampooning Blair, Reagan, JFK and every other leader in a time of military threat. The ending is the cherry on an eternally magnificent movie feast.

Not to be MissedBy SaandRo (27 reviews) , 04 Sep 2013Known as a classic and with good reason, this is film is extremely funny and entertaining while at the same time building up some incredible tension. Some really remarkable performances and a hilarious and frightening look at the inanity of nuclear war, highly recommended.
The best film ever?By Paul_B (2 reviews) , 24 Jul 2013It's no surprise that this title earns multiple five star reviews, as it is one of the most intelligent, well crafted and finely acted black comedies of all time. Probably the greatest Sellers film, as well as the greatest Kubrick film means that it is hard to recommend this title enough.
The only criticism I can make against the film is that it almost devalues the genre as there is so little that comes even close to it in terms of subject matter, acting, direction, or, perhaps most of all, dialogue.
Yes, the dialogue. It seems to be often forgotten about in modern films, or at least, is the element that most often fails to impress me in all but the most well written comedies and animations. In this film though, the dialogue is pure gold. In every scene, and in almost every line there is intelligence and thoughtfully crafted witticism, and it is no surprise that many film tropes and memes have been named after it.
As well as the pathos and dark wit, there are also multiple subtle and overt uses of slapstick which, when put altogether means I would recommend this film to everyone as one of, if not the greatest film in history, but definitely the highest ever form of black comedy.

Just watch it!By a customer , 22 May 2013Don't be put off by the fact that it is a little old and about the cold war. It is just as fun today as the day it was made. Properly more-so as the chance of nuclear war is much lower today. Also if you think you already know the entire plot from discussions about the film there are plenty of plot twists and great dialogue rarely mentioned.
