Lush green aerial photography of the Venezuelan jungle stands in stark contrast to the dark and depressing urbanity of American city life where Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) works as a doctor in the emergency room of Chicago Memorial Hospital. His wife, Emily Darrow (Susanna Thompson), was last seen in a rainstorm in Venezuela, .. Read more

In this disappointing and belated attempt to cash in on the success of supernatural dramas such as The Sixth Sense, Kevin Costner stars as an ER doctor based in Chicago who is devastated by the death of his pregnant wife Emily while on a Red Cross mission in Venezuela. Costner becomes convinced that his wife is trying to contact him from beyond after hearing about the near-death experiences of one of her former patients. The recurrence of dragonfly images — Emily had a similar mark on her back — and an encounter with Linda Hunt's eccentric nun send Costner off on a jungle adventure. Sadly, neither the understated performance of Costner nor a welcome cameo from Kathy Bates can rescue this schmaltzy misfire.
A film that must be watched!
Costner is a an A&E doctor that is completly lost when his pregnant wife dies in a tragic coaching accident in South America. But is she trying to contact him from beyond? The children in the oncology ward that were treated previously by his wife may have the answer.
Great film that can't fail to touch you.
As always Kevin Costner's acting is on the wooden side but nevertheless this film does keep you interested. There are some genuine scary moments and the ending was unexpected but made sense of a sometimes wandering plot. Kathy Bates was wasted in this film and reduced to the part of a bit player. Not worthy of her talents.Overall well worth viewing.
great film kevin costner is excellent in this sad ghostly film one to watch.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film as it was a mixture of supernatural, drama, sadness and happiness.

great film kevin costner is excellent in this sad ghostly film one to watch.
After the death of his wife when she volunteered for a mission in the depths of a jungle as a doctor, Kevin Costner's character, a doctor himself, cannot come to terms with the death. When patients recovering from near-death experiences in his ward and recount their sightings to Kevin, he begins hesitantly to believe that his wife is trying to speak to him through pictures of a dragonfly, his deceased wife's favourite creature, and also a mysterious symbol representing features on ordinance survey maps.
The film slowly but surely ramps up the creepiness, but supernatural events turn from the sinister type to a warmer brooding mood, when the film suggests that the deceased wife is trying to speak to him through his patients.
This film has a definite edge to it at the beginning, and softens out to touch the audience's hearts, and should not be classed in the supernatural horror genre. It touches on issues of mourning and acceptance of a loved-one's untimely death. A mediocre performance from Costner, but in the end, it is not a film genre that entirely suits his action-tough-guy label.
great flim i thoughly enjoyed it it had so many emotions rolled into the flim from beginning to end. The type of flim i could have watched for hours. worth while watching.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film as it was a mixture of supernatural, drama, sadness and happiness.
A good entertaining film with a different kind of story ! Kostner shows he is in the league of extraordinary actors.
I challenge anyone to watch this film and not be profoundly moved by it !
What a fab film.
The story is unusual,a little creepy (and I don't do creepy at all!), but one that everyone on the planet can relate to in some fashion, from some experience deep within the soul.
Kevin Costner is absolutly at his best in a film like this. How anyone can fault an actor who can sucessfully portray such diverse characters as he has over the years really wants their head testing - and this role is no exception.
I admire Costner for not tryiny to be all thing to all men. What you see is what you get, but somehow he gets away magnificently with this every single time - with every role that he take on, whether based in reality, history, the future or anywhere else that you can come up with (and I have to admit that there are other very well known actors that try to do the same thing and fail miserably every time!)
The story itself is an absolute blinder. You don't see the remarkable twist at the end coming at all.
Anyone who has lost a close friend/partner/spouse or member of the family will relate to the issues raised in this film. The whole thing is just a beautiful creation, with real thought and consideration for a very difficult subject matter.
I don't think that I will ever get tired of watching this film - even though I now know the ending - I find something new in it ever time that I watch it.
Every new life experience that the viewer has will colour their perception of the film and it's main characters, so everytime that you watch it different nuances come to light that you missed the last time that you watched it.
I have asked my husband to buy this for our permanent collection and, for once, he was more than happy to put himself about to find it.
Watch, watch and watch again. Then when you have finished find someone to watch it with you. You will be as suprised at their reaction as you were at your own.
I wish I could give it 10 stars as it truly deserves it!!!!!!!!
fantastic film. It kept us tottally involed in the fim.
I enjoyed Kevin Costna in this part.
Well worth a watch.
