Let down
By GreyKnight (14 reviews) from Norwich , 18 Jul 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Based upon the first of a trilogy of books with a huge fan following, much was expected of this film; sadly it's a complete failure.
Put simply, this is visually horrific; the 3D graphics aren't even of computer-game standard, let alone good enough to be in a film. The 'traditional' animation is also very poor, outclassed by any average children's cartoon.
Many people argue to forgive this because it still represents the books, but I think that it even does a very poor job of telling the story and I wouldn't for a moment consider reccommending it to anyone. Even if you're a slow reader, you're better off getting Weis & Hickman's book than letting this put you off.- Was this review helpful to you?

(26)Everyone can't be wrong!
By a customer , 14 Aug 2012Despite a myriad of poor reviews I felt I owed it to the franchise to give this a look.
The books are easy to read and piece together a thoroughly enjoyable tale of swords and sorcery so what better place to start.
Unfortunately this film just doesn't work and therefore doesn't do the books justice. The combination of methods of animation is just bizarre. The CGI looks atrocious in comparison to recent movies but that could be forgiven if it were the best option for delivering this fim. It just isn't though.
The other disappointing thing about it is the poor scriptwriting and sub-standard delivery by the actors involved. It all seems wooden and awkward.
Hopefully this franchise will be given another go as this effort falls short, which is a shame!- Was this review helpful to you?

Enjoyable, despite its flaws.
By Sleekweasel (6 reviews) from Cambridge , 24 Jun 2012An interesting mixture of computer generated animation (dragony types and magic) and limited cel animation (everything else). The story is somewhat stilted - feeling like someone's D&D campaign was written down - and I can understand the other reviewers' poor responses, but I rather enjoyed the approach and would cheerfully watch a sequel.
Some amusing moments - the lingering camera shot on the dragon-woman's bust line during the introduction, the senile old dragon who thinks human children are her own offspring.- Was this review helpful to you?

Give it a Miss.
By TheHoodedMan (54 reviews) from Nottingham , 20 Apr 2011Briefly, poor quality animation, reminiscent of those mass produced kids tv cartoons. Quality control was absent when this was made.
Save your money, rent something else instead.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dragonlance?? More like Naff-lance!!
By Zentron (20 reviews) from Manchester , 16 Nov 2010I enjoyed reading the Dragonlance stories of old and was pleased to see an animated movie was finnaly out, at least... until I began to watch it that is!!
At its best, this movie was very annoying, the character designs were nice, but the overall feel of them was quite flat. The animation was slow, but brightly colouted, though when the 3D character elements appeared, all credibility went down the toilet, with a great big stinking... you get the idea!
Story and plot wise, it was OKish, but often annoying and it never really felt like it was really of movie quality. The voice actors did a poor job and the voice direction seemed like they didn't really much care.
If you're a die-hard fan of the Dragonlance comics, stick with them, as you will find youselves stomping on this DVD within moments! If you are after an introduction into the Dragonlance world, go to your local comic store and buy one of the comics or graphic novels, as this movie would certainly put you off, from what is, a great comic series. If you're looking for something with goblins, orcs, magic and swords, buy the Dungeons & Dragons animated series, at least you will be entertained!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Why did they make it like that?
By a customer from Kent , 17 May 2010The only thing I can think of was that it was on purpose. It was just horrible graphics and as another reviewer said, the story-telling was bad as well. Maybe they were going after the 80's retro (ultra corny) cartoon style, I'm not sure - but it was such a big boring let-down that I could hardly manage to watch the whole thing. I have read almost all the Dragonlance novels and am a huge fan (like most people that read them) of the series, and they could have done so much better by them. Honestly I cant believe that the authors would approve the making of this movie. I don't think casting was done well - no one sounded convincing (sorry Keifer Sutherland, but I pictured Raistlin a lot different than that). Also, why did they bother to give the role of Tika to a named actor, she had like 2 lines..
One can only hope that in the future they do a different remake of this movie - and that it would live up to the expectations of the fans.- Was this review helpful to you?
