Brendan Fraser, who scored a surprise hit in 1997 with George of the Jungle, here brings another of Jay Ward's cartoon favourites to life, though with considerably less success. Director Hugh Wilson (Police Academy) seems to be aiming for an affectionate live-action tribute to the likes of Dastardly and Muttley as the likeably dumb Mountie of the title (Fraser) does battle with his nemesis, Snidely Whiplash (Alfred Molina), who has created a fake gold rush in Canada. The actors, including Sarah Jessica Parker and former Python Eric Idle, enthusiastically enter into the spirit of tomfoolery, but there's far too much reliance on slapdash slapstick.
This live-action version of a 60s TV cartoon gives Fraser a chance to reprise his George of the Jungle act as a good-natured idiot; it provides some mild amusement.
Dudley Do-Right follows the hilarious exploits of the dedicated but hapless young Mountie (Brendan Fraser), as he struggles to outwit the evil Snidely Whiplash (Alfred Molina). Snidely has devised the scam of the century, setting off the biggest gold rush since the Klondike. Prospector Kim J. Darling (Eric Idle) is an unsuspecting oaf who joins the millionaire wannabes streaming into the town that has since been named Whiplash City. It's up to the usually sweet and naive Dudley to lead the charge, defeat the villain, win the heart of Nell Fenwick (Sarah Jessica Parker) and bring peace back to Semi-Happy Valley. Hopefully, he won't screw it up.
superb.... well worth renting out.
I felt quite disgruntled with SJP for starring in this film - I wouldn't have rented it at all if she hadn't been in it! I had to watch this dvd over about 6 evenings to finally reach the end! This film was cringeworthy & tedious. Were it not for my rule that I watch everything I rent right through to the bitter end pushing me on, I certainly wouldn't have managed!
I had a feeling though not having grown up in the US seeing the aminated version that I wasn't in on a joke here that would have made the film seem a bit better, at least in a nostalgic way. On a positive note, the cartoon at the start is quite enjoyable!
