DUST is a film that is epic in every way -- from its dashing leading man (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE's Joseph Fiennes) to its encompassing of different continents and centuries. Fiennes plays a young man named Elijah, who lives in the American West at the end of the 19th century. After he wins the heart of a woman that his older brother Luke is also enamored with, Luke (played by David Wenham) travels across the Atlantic and becomes a mercenary in Macedonia. DUST tracks the story of the two brothers for more than a century, ending in 20th century New York City.

Macedonian film-maker Milcho Manchevski has lofty ambitions for this brutal, depressing film, that alternates between a contemporary New York drama and an early-20th-century Wild East blood bath. This is an awkward combination, despite some inventive storytelling touches, and it's not aided by an unappealing quartet of protagonists. Its starting point is the attempted robbery of an apartment by a petty thief (Adrian Lester), who is wounded by ailing owner Rosemary Murphy. For some reason, she decides to recall the origins of her ancestors, namely two brothers (a pair of shaky performances from David Wenham and Joseph Fiennes) who fall out over a woman and end up as fierce adversaries in the wilds of Macedonia. Manchevski playfully tinkers with the nature of narration — questions raised by Lester over minor details have an immediate impact on past events seen in flashback — but there is little else in this tangled, bloody mess to engage or excite the viewer.
This very wild eastern Western bears an uncanny resemblance to that supposedly extinguished early-'90s entity, the... read more on Time Out
Its a great movie, wich u need to watch it closely. The director Was nominated for an oscar in 1995 for his best ever film Before the rain.I cant wait for that title to come out.
Painful. Nonsensical. Extreme, gratuitous violence. Poor writing. Poor directing.
Attempted good acting, but with all the above, it ain't gonna happen. And did no one suggest they hire an accent coach?
Bless Wenham for trying, but ... I couldn't even get through it. It's like trying to watch Van Helsing just to watch Hugh Jackman cuz he's handsome. I couldn't do that either.
If you're contemplating this film because you're a Wenham fan/obsessive (I'll admit it!), DO NOT RENT THIS FILM. Rent 'Gettin' Square' instead. (or anything else!) In Gettin Square, he's far from handsome and dashing, but he'll still win your heart.
