Season 6 is, in my opinion, when Dynasty hit its highpoint because the plotlines went completely beserk, and the shoulderpads grew to American football player proportions.

After the royal wedding of Amanda Carrington and Prince Michael of Moldavia, where some of the dead wood of the earlier season's cast gets killed off by the country's rebel forces, we have Alexis dressed as a nun to escape Moldavia and alert the authorities. She turns her back on Dex Dexter to pursue King Galen, Prince Michael's father, who crowns her queen of Moldavia. After finding her daughter Amanda in bed with Dex, Alexis divorces him and marries Galen only to find he's double-crossing her. Meanwhile, Sammy Jo arranges for her aunt Krystle to be kidnapped with the help of a woman who looks like her but with a Southern accent. Krystle and 'Rita' end up having a showdown in the attic of Delta Rho, Sammy Jo's stud farm, with Linda Evans fighting herself. Alexis's sister, Caress (played by Kate O'Mara in her heyday) is freed from a jail in Caracas where she has been falsely imprisoned by Alexis. 'Cassie' takes her revenge by writing a book, 'Sister Dearest', exposing Alexis' evil doings. Meanwhile, Alexis digs up Blake's lost brother, Ben (Christopher Cazenove, another Brit) from Australia and together they try to destroy Blake's company by a forced merger. After being almost strangled by Blake when she takes the Carrington mansion as part of his saleable assets, Alexis takes over a newspaper, the Denver Chronicle, and proceeds to destroy her enemies' reputations, including Dominique Devereux, Blake's half-sister and a famous nightclub singer. The latter have a fantastic catfight in Alexis' bedroom when Alexis calls Dominique a 'second rate lounge act making a fool of herself'. The season finishes with Claudia Carrington going mad again. Claudia sets fire to La Mirage. In short, all the drama and campness you could want from the definitive 1980s soap.

  • Dynasty starts to lose the plot completely

    Rated - 3.0 stars

Dynasty started to lose its way in this series, very probably because the spin-off 'The Colbys' started airing about a third of the way through so that Jeff Colby and Fallon could star in their own series, along with the likes of Stephanie Beacham and Charlton Heston. With the scriptwriters now being pulled in two directions, 'Dynasty' seems to have come off the worse. Major plot developments ramble on and on and then suddenly fizzle out completely without apparent resolution or indeed much explanation. The whole 'Moldavia' sub-plot simply disappears without trace or very much warning, and the 'Krystle's Double' sub-plot, one of the most ridiculous subplots ever dreamed up by the scriptwriters and which strains belief to its utter limits, is also suddenly over in a flash, apparently resolved and never referred to again.

Also, with two series now running in tandem, characters from Dynasty go off to do things in The Colbys and then return referring to what they have been doing - and of course originally you would have been able to view both series and follow the characters back and forth. With just Dynasty available on DVD, you are suddenly only getting half the story. Jeff and Fallon are constantly referred to but the entire story is taking place 'offstage' as it were.

Sets and costumes, however, go from strength to strength - shoulder pads reach unprecedented widths and the worst excesses of the 80s style is much in evidence. Both Collins' and Evans' costumes get more and more OTT, and the men increasingly look like extras from Miami Vice.

  • JAM PACKED AND EXPLOSIVE

This is an EXTREMELY long series and well worth it! It is so jam packed, starting with the aftermath in Moldavia and then one thing after another occurs. Lots of fighting, deviousness and manipulation. This is a series not to be missed. Without wanting to spoil it for you there is a huge cliffhanger and surprise at the end of 30 episodes.
