Often, with a thriller, the motor for the plot really doesn’t matter that much. You might have seen North by Northwest half a dozen times and still not be able to remember what James... read more »
DJ Caruso and Shia Lebeouf reteam for this pretty decent actioner with the man Speilberg overseeing the purse strings. Having previously worked together on the Rear Window clone Disturbia the elements certainly pointed towards a decent film, but while the film starts pretty well and the tension is ramped up, the end leaves a bit of a bad taste as the film degenerates into a clone of no less then at least 3 other futuristic actioners. Lebeouf is again on form, as Jerry, an unambitious sole who is swept into a sinister terrorist plot after he discovers that his twin brother has committed suicide. Receiving a phone call from a mysterious female, he is forced to jump through hoops and avoid capture by the authorities though he has no idea why. Also on the receiving end of this blackmail is Rachel (Monaghan) a single mother who is forced into the plot to protect her son. The action is fast and furious, and as Jerry and Rachel come into contact with other conspirators also with their arms up the backs, they realise that they are not the only 2, but are part of a much bigger conspiracy. However just after halfway the film loses steam as the plot swings towards an all too familiar tone covered by many previous films. I would mention which films they are but to do so would easily give the game away, but I thought of at least 4 and Im sure youd have more to add. Eagle Eye is a decent popcorn flick though and Caruso manages to keep it the right side of Michael Bay, with brilliant chase sequences and a pretty good script. Unfortunately though the films seen-it-before central premise ruins what has gone on around it and ultimately leads to a disappointed vibe at its conclusion.
Eagle Eye has gone straight to number one on the US box office chart after its opening weekend on release. Starring Shia LeBeouf, the new thriller made some $29.2 million (£16.2 million) in its first three days, despite only receiving mediocre reviews. The movie is directed by DJ Caruso and focuses on the story of strangers who become fugitives after mysterious phone calls force them into dangerous situations. Commenting on the film's successful weekend, Dreamworks spokesman Chip Sullivan... Read more
