Fails to reach the heights

It is a shame that a potentially intriguing story of Napoleon's life in exile on St Helena with a splendid cast and an interesting director - Fielder Cook, director of 'Patterns' and 'A Big Hand for the Little Lady', doesn't add up to more than we are given here. Kenneth Haigh, the original Jimmy Porter in 'Look Back in Anger', plays Napoleon in Rod Steiger mode, but is not always totally convincing. This is more than partly the fault of the screenplay (by Millard Lampell) which introduces an unlikely romantic entanglement with a young girl resident of the island (Georgina Hale). The film is only gripping in the verbal duels with the exiled emperor's antagonists, Ralph Richardson as Sir Hudson Lowe, governor of the island, Michael Williams as the Irish naval doctor assigned to look after him, and best of all, John Gielgud as Lord Cecil, the crafty politician sent to bargain with him. The cast also includes Billie Whitelaw as his ex-mistress, Ferdy Mayne and Lee Montague. The locations are unusual and striking. Unfotunately the colour and print quality is not what it might be.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)Very slow
By a customer , 14 Oct 2011This film was like watching paint dry. I have never been so bored watching a film in years. The best parts were with Ralph Richardson & John Gielgud. Unfortunately their scenes were limited to at best 10 minutes! Also the standard of the print was atrocious. Almost like lost footage from the 1800's (if film had existed then of course).- Was this review helpful to you?

Caged bird release plea !
By Tozza27 (10 reviews) from Wirral , 12 Aug 2010Oh dear !!
I am 64 and grew up with 'proper' films at the flics/cinema , but this dog in a cage is awful - a representation of all that can be bad in a film regardless of how good the actors are.
The script is painful and some of the acting so wooden I expected to see the puppeteers` strings at times. We got the film by mistake and gave it a go - 15 minutes before we both gave up and called for the release of the Eagle.
Sorry Sir John (Gielgud),Ralph Richardson,Kenneth Haig and all the others - this was rather pathetic.
