Ozu - Vol. 1

Director Yasujiro Ozu
Run time 370 mins Certificate PG

17th February 2005

Similarly to Late Spring a family is concerned that their 28 year old daughter is still single and again it has a slight feel of a Ministry of Information film to remind the post-war society of their traditional strengths in the face of western influence. The film could have been cut by 30 minutes with no impact to the main story of 3 generations of a family living together, their inter-relationships and their wish for the girl to marry while she says she is enjoying single life. Not a lot happens but the acting is top notch and the scenes are so realistic of people enjoying themselves that as with every Ozu film I have seen I find I have a smile on my face. Enjoy, but try not to see his films too close together.
