As usual in disaster movies, the big one hits Los Angeles at the worst possible moment for the cast in this highly enjoyable hokum. The first hour builds up the tension with tremor suspense before the entire city is razed spectacularly to the ground; the dam-busting sequence has since inspired a Universal theme park favourite. Mark Robson's star-packed extravaganza deservedly won a special achievement Oscar for best visual effects. (Did making us believe Ava Gardner was Lorne Greene's daughter come under that category, too?) Registers an eight on the entertainment Richter scale.
