As usual in disaster movies, “the big one” hits Los Angeles at the worst possible moment for the cast in this highly enjoyable hokum. The first hour builds up the tension with tremor suspense before the entire city is razed spectacularly to the ground; the dam-busting sequence has since inspired a Universal theme park favourite. Mark Robson's star-packed extravaganza deservedly won a special achievement Oscar for best visual effects. (Did making us believe Ava Gardner was Lorne Greene's daughter come under that category, too?) Registers an eight on the entertainment Richter scale.

Oscar-winning actor and screen great Charlton Heston died at his home in Beverly Hills on Saturday night, it has been announced. Heston, who the Hollywood Reporter described as having chiselled-granite looks, made his big screen debut in 1941's Peer Gynt, but it was Cecil B de Mille's circus epic The Greatest Show On Earth that launched him to worldwide fame 11 years later. He went on to portray giants of world history in sprawling cinematic epics, including Moses in 1956's The Ten Commandments, Read more
