  Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried's new romantic drama Dear John has ended Avatar's reign at the top of the U.S. box office. The Lasse Hallstrom tearjerker has opened with a surprise £20.3 million - almost £6.25 million more than James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster in its eighth week on release.   Avatar on top for a seventh week at U.S. box office

  James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar has inched closer to sinking the £375.4 million U.S. box office record set by his 1997 drama Titanic - after the sci-fi movie dominated competition for its seventh straight weekend (29-31Jan10). The 3-D adventure movie added another £18.8 million to its domestic total, now at £371.6 million - and it's on track to soar past Titanic's U.S. record.   Mel Gibson decided to make a movie comeback following his eight-year hiatus because he was feeling "stale".
