In Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, a suburban fairy tale with incredibly imaginative sets, an Avon lady, Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), discovers the half-finished experiment--a man/monster named Edward (Johnny Depp)--of a mad scientist (played magically by Vincent Price) living in the neighborhood's old abandoned castle. This bewitchingly oddball Beauty and the Beast fairy tale from director Tim Burton is a superlative masterpiece and one of the best fantasy films ever made. Its haunting power, exquisite charm and dark romance are a match for the spellbinding work of Hans Christian Andersen, while Johnny Depp's sensitive performance as scientist Vincent Price's Punkenstein creation is a revelation. Humanoid Edward's inability to touch the things he loves because of his razor-sharp fingers makes for potent symbolism of the highest mythic order. The finale packs an unforgettable emotional wallop, assisted by Danny Elfman's gloriously magical score.

I love this film. it is the first Tim Burton / Johnny Depp film and it definetly starts the trend of excellence. This film will break your heart and yet is still hilarious.
Yep this movie is original in many scenes but it's really a remake of Mary Shelley's ' Frankenstein' meets ' Beauty And The Beast' & ' Phantom Of The Operah' basically there was this eccentric Professor{ Vincent Pryce} who builds a robot he names Edward{Johnny Depp} to keep him company. the Professor has given Edward a heart and legs and skin and all is left is some human hands. but then the Professor dies and Edward is left with scissors for hands. Local avon lady Mrs Peggy Boggs{Dianne Weisz} lives in a Doctor Suess - styled suburbia with nosy neighbours and she invites Edward to live in her home with her husband, Bill Boggs{comedian Allan Arkin}their son Tim & daughter Kim{Winona Ryder} who is already going out with someone else. that someone else is like Beauty And The Beast's Gaston for this movie. great movie and some very dark and Burtonish themes. the end will make you weep and the funny bits will sooth your heart. must see Tim Burton{Sleepy Hollow, BeetleJuice} has never been better and Danny Elfman's score is beautiful and enchanting!
One of Johnny Depp's best films in my opinion. Tim Burton's best film yet, Edward Scissorhands is a film that takes you on a small yet magical journey. You can't help but fall in love with Johnny's sweet and adorable character. A film that I have wathced a million times and still never get bored watching it.
A must for any fantasy/Johnny Depp/Tim Burton fan!!!
the best film i have seen in a long time - i loved it form beging to end!!!! Brilliant
A modern day fairy tale which takes you back to watching disney movies with your parents. You can't really imagine any other actor playing the role of Edward Scissorhands than Johnny Depp. It's also probably Winona Ryder's performance outside of Heathers. I suspect there's also a lot of meaning to the film since it deals with someone that doesn't fit in. His desire to fit in and other peoples reactions to him are the cornerstone of the film.

This is a motion picture everyone should watch, it is engrossingly original, enthrallingly atmospheric and completely mesmerising. From the performances to the effects to the bitter sweet story line, it is a complete dream. It is a must see.
Great story, brilliant script and top notch acting, this is just one of those films that I could easily watch again and again.
Depp is great as Edward as is Wiest as the local Avon Lady who befriends Edward and takes him home to live with her family. The story is so well written and it just simple carrys you through the story.
The cinematography is amazing, great contrast of colours, dark in the castle, bright and vivid in town, really great stuff. The direction is fantastic as well, Burton truly captures the story well.
This is a truly exceptional piece of work, by far the best Burton film I have seen to date.
As always, this movie had that special quality that all Tim Burton movies have, and which I - personally - love. Almost like a dream, where fantasy and reality mix, but it all feels so real, because the characters are interesting and easy to relate to. It had many magical moments, and seems as fresh and original to me today as when it was first released. It wasn't too long, it wasn't too short. Was a good dose of weirdness and wonderfulness. And the directing was art.
Tim Burton's rather dark directorial skills are turned to the stange urban myth surrounding Edward Scissorhands. Onto the bones of a classic gothic story are added a meaty, yet easy-going, analysis of mid-twentieth century Americana. The existence of the housewife (recently explored in Daldry's 2002 picture The Hours) is shaken by the discovery of a new Frankenstein's monster, in a make-belief suburbia surrounded by an unkown modern land.
Even if this contemporary morality play falls short of its potential, the cinematography is sometimes amazing and seldomly boring. Johnny Depp, as Edward, Winona Ryder and Dianne Wiest pull off stunning performances. Whatsmore this movie's spine-tingling score by Danny Elfman make it an absolute pleasure from start to finish.
This film's extremely broad appealmake it a must-see for everyone.
Johnny Depp is perfect for the role of misfit in this heart breaking film. Edward scissorhands is 'rescued' from his house where he lives alone, and therefore does not know how to live among other people. Then he keeps getting blamed for things he hasnt done, and all the time he has to manage living with scissors for hands - very frustrating - and this will make you feel so sorry for him, especially in the scene where he first tries eating- awwwwwwwww!
This will make you cry and laugh both at the same time. I have never watched a film as sad or as quirky before.
Look at the other reviews...this is a must see, especially if you want to see johnny depp in a VERY different role!
the best film i have seen in a long time - i loved it form beging to end!!!! Brilliant
Sorry, but if like me you prefer a bit of realism in your films, you won't like this at all. The fantasy aspect and 'toy town' like environment was weird and the whole thing had an unreal 'stepford wives' feel to it. I found it mildly intriguing rather than enjoyable - just too 'fairy tale' like for me.
