Most helpful review
its greatest strength is its greatest weakness
By honourablewren (10 reviews) from Kingston upon Thames , 29 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Eight men out tells the true story of the 1919 Chicago black sox scandal where some players in the team were bribed to throw the world series.
The film, adapted from a book, examines the reasons why the team accepted the bribes and the impact that the scandal had on the game.
The acting is uniformly good with stars such as D.B. Sweeney holding his own against the likes of John Cusack. Similarly, the script itself is full of suspense and drama.
Unfortunately, the reason why this film is not too well know in the UK is because the sport is baseball. Baseball movies have not fared too well in England with such failings as The Rookie. Eight men out suffers the same problem and will alientate some of its audience because of its subject matter.
This is not a sports movie in the true sense of the word. As long as one realises that this movie is more about the drama than the sport then it is 2 hours of film intrigue.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great Film - even for non sport fans
By BagPussAA (13 reviews) from Preston , 16 Jul 2008I am not a baseball fan and have never sat and watched a game as I live in England where the sport is largely unknown. I watched the film after reading bits and peices of the Black Sox scandel in the book 'Shoeless Joe' which 'Field of Dreams' is based on. You do not have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this engaging movie. The performances are superb and the story is tragic. A most enjoyable movie and highly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not your usual 4 star.....
By a customer from London , 31 Aug 2006Different to all the films you usually see (in particular since the rise of blockbusters/comic book movies/epic oscar nominees). A must see for anyone who likes john cusack or sports films. though this can be enjoyed by anyone. It may not be a classic in the true sense, but it is entertaining for every minute, based on an interesting story and with a great cast.- Was this review helpful to you?

Serves You Right You Cheating Dogs
By Gibbo from Moreton, Wirral , 21 Jul 2006Boo Hoo, some overpaid sportsmen get fried for fixing games, good riddance I tell ya. Poor film, overlong and dull, except for the ever reliable Cusack who could pull a rabbit out of his ass if he needed to.- Was this review helpful to you?

Enjoyable but .......
By crispin40 (553 reviews) from Stirling, Scotland , 20 Jan 2006I borrowed this as I am interested in anything that John Sayles does.
Whilst the production and direction were up to his usual very high standard, I would urge anyone who wants to get maximum value from it to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of the rules of baseball.
The actors, especially John Cusak and David Strathearn were excellent and the court scenes were reminiscent of those in 'Breaker Morant'. Enjoyable but ...also a bit of a mystery sometimes to me. I think it was based on a true event so - something else I've learned through film!- Was this review helpful to you?
