    [Highly rated reviewer]

An excellent adaptation by Rajinder Singh Bedi of his novel of the same name. It captures the essence of Panjaabee mores and the rural atmosphere fairly authentically. Hema Malini, a South Indian, plays a Northener with flair and realism. Anu Malik's music fits the theme perfectly. Not the usual Bollywood mishmash!

There have been a number of films about the plight of widows in Indian Society. There have been examples of women committing 'Sati', being placed in an ashram. This movie deals with situations where the brother-in-law ends up being forced to marry the widow. Story how both characters come to terms with the awkward situation. Although the director seems to have rushed through the more complex and poignant parts of the relationship in the second half of the film. I believe that relationship after the marriage deserved more exposure and development. Overall it is a good film
