Will Ferrell makes yet another memorable splash on the big screen in Jon Favreau's sweet and hilarious Christmas fable. Ferrell is Buddy, an innocent figure who was raised as an elf in the North Pole by his adoptive father, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart). When Buddy discovers that he's actually a human being, he heads to New York City to reunite with his biological father. The trouble is that his dad, Walter (James Caan), is a publishing executive who doesn't have time for anything other than work. Buddy moves in with Walter and his family, and proceeds to teach them a lesson or two about what being a family really means. Meanwhile, he also falls head over heels in love with the incredibly cute department store clerk, Jovie (Zooey Deschanel). By the time Christmas Eve rolls around, the general lack of spirit in the air threatens to ground Santa for the big night. He must rely on Buddy's expertise and overall enthusiasm to ensure that Christmas will be saved once again. Favreau's film is family entertainment at its finest, featuring a performance by Ferrell that is at once innocent, tender, and laugh-out-loud funny. A stellar supporting cast--including Caan, Deschanel, Newhart, and Faizon Love--adds to the film's already overabundant charm.

Director Jon Favreau's sweet seasonal comedy relies entirely on the talents of Will Ferrell (Old School), who plays Buddy, a fully grown adult raised from a baby by Santa's little helpers. Now too clumsy and outsized — by elf standards — to assist with present creation and testing, Buddy discovers the existence of his real father (James Caan in full-bore Scrooge mode) and heads for New York. Despite modern effects trickery that has created pint-sized toymakers and flying reindeer, this strives for the feel of vintage Disney through twee settings and storybook narration from Buddy's surrogate dad, Bob Newhart. Dressed in a snug green outfit throughout and dispensing decorations, sugary snacks and a beaming grin, Ferrell is the life and soul of an otherwise unexceptional Christmas celebration. So raise a glass to his good elf.
A silly comedy about an innocent abroad; its success will depend on whether you find Ferrell funny or, simply, worringly odd.
Its stupid, its fomulaic, its trashy, its mushy, its obvious and its blatantly a film for kids...but its funny, its silly and its touching in a similar way to 'miracle on 34th street'. We're not talking oscars here...we're talking a gentle way to spend a sunday afternoon. Fun for all the family.
Will at his best. Saw this at the cinema and my friends and I were laughing louder than the kids! A whole film dedicated to the genius himself with all the usual slapstick nonsense that we've all come to love.
You thought 'A Night at the Roxbury' was good, do I think you'll like this even more. No...............YES!
Will Ferrell, he got game. But his impressive winning streak could be petering out if this lukewarm basketball comedy is all he has left in the tank. He plays 70s one-hit wonder Jackie Moon. His disco-funk anthem "Love Me Sexy" was such a hit it enabled him to buy his own basketball team, the Flint Tropics. Not only is he the owner, he's also the team's power forward - just one of the reasons they're firmly in last spot in the amateur American Basketball Association standings. When the ABA... Read more
