Will Ferrell makes yet another memorable splash on the big screen in Jon Favreau's sweet and hilarious Christmas fable. Ferrell is Buddy, an innocent figure who was raised as an elf in the North Pole by his adoptive father, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart). When Buddy discovers that he's actually a human being, he heads to New York City .. Read more

Director Jon Favreau's sweet seasonal comedy relies entirely on the talents of Will Ferrell (Old School), who plays Buddy, a fully grown adult raised from a baby by Santa's little helpers. Now too clumsy and outsized — by elf standards — to assist with present creation and testing, Buddy discovers the existence of his real father (James Caan in full-bore Scrooge mode) and heads for New York. Despite modern effects trickery that has created pint-sized toymakers and flying reindeer, this strives for the feel of vintage Disney through twee settings and storybook narration from Buddy's surrogate dad, Bob Newhart. Dressed in a snug green outfit throughout and dispensing decorations, sugary snacks and a beaming grin, Ferrell is the life and soul of an otherwise unexceptional Christmas celebration. So raise a glass to his good elf.
A silly comedy about an innocent abroad; its success will depend on whether you find Ferrell funny or, simply, worringly odd.

Its stupid, its fomulaic, its trashy, its mushy, its obvious and its blatantly a film for kids...but its funny, its silly and its touching in a similar way to 'miracle on 34th street'. We're not talking oscars here...we're talking a gentle way to spend a sunday afternoon. Fun for all the family.
This film was not as good as I had hoped for Will Ferrell's first real leading role. It has some very funny moments but is mainly just for children to enjoy.
Will Ferrell pratfalls his way through this Christmas spirit filled kiddie pleaser playing Buddy, a human raised by elves who thinks he's a elf, a childish one at that. He goes to New York to find his long lost father (James Caan) with the usual hijinx that occur in these type of films and truthfully this wouldn't be much good at all if it wasn't for Ferrell's charisma and huge comedic talent. Its jokes and set ups are all pretty obvious and it's formulaic in the extreme, but formulas have persisted for a reason. Only the obligatory ultra-happy ending drags and seems oddly out of place, but it ought to keep the kids and their watchful parents happy over the yuletide school break.
Elf is all about the christmas spirit and is very good.

Good, harmless, clean, seasonal, family fun.
There I managed to fit all the cliches I could think of into a small space and that's what the film is like too.
Will Ferrell is good, but there are no hilarious moments. This is a basic Xmas feelgood film. No more, no less.
Really did not know what to expect with this one. But from the first 10 minutes I was completely lost in the adventure and comedy of it. It is a trully wonderful family film that my 7 yr old laughed continuiously at.
A feel good movie that will be an annual christmas treat.
one to watch with the kids on a cold rainy evening
Who couldn't like this movie? Kids will love it and there's enough gags to keep anyone else amused all the way.
Will Ferrell has found a comedy niche, in the same way that Ben Stiller has, and doesn't dissappoint if you are a fan of his. Having said that, I prefer him in his more adult orientated roles.
A perfect warm-up to the festive season, but don't expect a 'Bad Santa', as this more for the children. Enjoyable though!
This was truly an awful film, i was actually squirming in my seat at one point. One or two funny moments cannot make up for the other hour and a half of torture.Strictly for the under fives, having said that my toddler threw his potty at the screen when it was on... actions speak louder than words they say.
GREAT for the kids, A laugh out loud film with a good story.
A movie which hits all the right notes. My kids watched it time and time again until I returned it after five days - a record for this household.
Yes, it's corny and predictable at times but that actually adds to the enjoyment. It really does bring the warmth of Christmas to the viewer, as well as being funny and entertaining.
