  • Elite Squad 2 pulls no punches on Brazilian corruption

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Some labelled director Jose Padilha a facist for his balanced and brutal account of Brazilian crime and violent punishment in the Golden Bear winning Elite Squad. His sequel aims to reverse this judgement.

Twelve years have passed in this Rio story but the bullets are still flying and, almost immediately, you are thrown into the heart of a brilliantly-staged high security prison riot. Under Nascimiento’s (played with soul by Wagner Moura) watch and his Special Military Police (BOPE) charges, it turns into a disastorous bloodbath. The ensuing media and political storm blows Nasimiento up the chain to Secretary of Security from where Rio’s rotten core soon exposes itself, and bares its teeth.

Padilha’s pace is unrelenting. You can’t fit a shiv between the scenes as he crams a Wire-sized tableau of corruption and violence into 115-minutes. Annoyingly, his catalyst is an almost constant voiceover which haemorrhages much of the drama but, in his kaleidoscopic expose of Rio politics and crime, Padilha delivers a uniquely bruising right and left of polemic and action.

  • Don't watch unless you have seen the first one

I hate films with sub titles but after putting Elite Squad on just to pass the time I found that I really got into it and enjoyed it. So much so that I have just watched Elite Squad 2. Usually sequals aren't as good as the originals but it was just as great! I would definitly recommend watching both of them. Great action, story, drama and emotion. These two films are definitly better than most of the stuff that hollywood makes

one of the best movie i seen in ages! left me wanting to watch it again and again, and i have. brilliant. realistic and gripping movie, no hollywood action stunts etc to bore you, but just a good plot and storyline to keep to captivated through until the end. watch Elite Squad the first one, and it is as equally entertaining.

Brilliant film!!! It shows you the sad truth about Brazilian politics and how spread out corruption really is. A must see, along with Elite Squad 1.

I was unsure at first because I dont tend to watch things with subtitles. However, the actual film made it totally acceptable and easy to follow. It is well structured in my opinion and better than most of Hollywood's productions, doesnt seem very over dramatic or far-fetched etc...like Die Hard and James Bond... Would have been full stars if i didnt have to exercise my eyes with reading for nearly 2 hours Stop reading and start watching
