    [Highly rated reviewer]

Juliette Binoche is a journalist investigating young students who turn to prostitution to finance their studies. They do this to have nice clothes, flats, shoes. It is presented as a reasonable choice and the two girls do not show any remorse.

They even enjoy the sex with some of their clients, although one is very cruel. Another serenades the girl after their triste. The journalist begins to doubt her own life and is intrigued by the fun the girls seem to be having but It goes wrong when she tries to apply the techniques to her own love life. Are all women trapped in similar relationships?

  • Nice idea let down by weak direction

As a fan of 'world' cinema, and Juliette B, I found this film to be far too much soft-porn and not enough depth to the characters. I do NOT blame Binoche. For me, this looks like weak direction and shallow scripting letting the side down. I feel that the sex scenes (which are abundant) do not portray anything other than the imaginative, romantic idea of prostitution, not the reality of it. The Cinematography is beautiful, although never ground-breaking, with repeated use of the same classic portrait-right, background-left composition. Sorry JB, an interesting idea poorly shot. Give it a miss.

  • A great insight into prostitution. Binoche is beautiful.

I love Binoche but also wanted to see it as the subject is very close to me and 6 years of my life. I found the prostitutes' insight spot on and not at all far fetched. The line that rang the most true with me is: 'what do you find the hardest?- Lies, lying all the time. Indeed, that was very hard for me.

Juliette Binoche shows herself up by revealing her acting skills to be simply a serious of facial expressions. You may have fallen for it in Certified Copy (I did; and before that I adored her in Three Colours: Blue), but here she's exposed as an empty box of tricks. Supposedly there's this story about a magazine editor writing a story about two young women who prostitue themselves to older men. Somehow this middle aged woman is shocked that there is prostitution in this world. She can't deal with it and neither can I and I fall asleep. Zzzzzzz

  • Fine film

    Rated - 4.0 stars

Forget what others say about it here: this is a fine film. Others have written about not 'liking' this film or its characters. What has that got to do with anything? It's engaging, thought provoking, and much of it is very beautiful to look at. That ought to be enough. This is a film about prostitution after all, not a rom-com and there is not much in it that will make anyone feel good about themselves or about others. But surely there is more to art than just those things?

A waste of one's time - I switched off after an hour. Quite unengaging - I had no interest in what happened to these characters.
