Most helpful review Emma

  • A good movie

    [Highly rated reviewer]

After reading the novel, I wanted to see how Jane Austin's writing transferred to the screen. This is not the best dramatisation of one of her books, but it was not too much of a disappointment. Ewan Mcgregar does not suit a long bob, but this did not detract from the story.

The only complaint I have is that this film rushed through the story at breakneck pace, missing many of the most interesting parts of the book and only slowing down in the final scenes.

I would reccommend not reading the book until after watching the film to avoid disappointment. If it's good Jane Austin you're after, Sense and Sensibility or Pride and Predjudice are far superior adaptations.

Great sets and costumes but very unlike the book and none the better for that. Cant really commend any performances either.

Sonja Knight - not by vicboy. I love period films, Jeremy Northam is outstanding in his role (Mr Knightley) and made me wish I was Emma instead of Gwyneth Paltrow! He is one of the best period actors in the business.

  • Don't bother

This film is completley ruined by a simmering Gwyneth Paltrow. An a-level drama student would have given a better performance. Jeremy Northam is however better than the chap who play Knightly in the BBC version, and pretty much carries the whole film. Would not recommend.

a perfect period drama, one to rival pride and prejudice for sure. gwyneth paltrow portrays a very like-able emma and is matched by jeremy northam as mr knightly seamlessly! great for a girls night in with romance and humour along the way- a must see.

Can't believe I haven't seen this before, and definitely will watch it again! What a charmingly romantic movie - the original Rom-com, only far, far better. Loved it!!!
