Drearily inane comedy, with uncertain performers enunciating unspeakable dialogue to an overpowering soundtrack.
Really stupid film, with a painful soundtrack, one-dimensional stereotypical characterisation, easily predictable neat-and-tidy ending, and terrible dialogue. Several aspects of the story just don't make sense.
I nearly gave up on this movie 3 or 4 times, but unfortunately I stuck with it til the cringe-worthy end. 'Cult comedy classic' they said! It might be cult, I don't know, but I didn't detect any comedy and it's certainly not a classic.
At BEST it's watchable, and that's only because Liv Tyler is so gorgeous.
I love this movie! All the characters are really likeable and you just want them to keep the store open so that they can continue doing what they love and sticking the finger up at the proverbial bad guys - the people who want to turn it into a 'Music Town' store!
what can you say about this film just watch it you will not be disappointed.great story and cast.extended and remixed from original film.watch liv tyler an 18yr old star in the making!
I always enjoy watching this film and it's very interesting to see now big stars like Liv Tyler and Renee Zelwegger in pre superstardom roles.
This film is extremely American in its feel but unless that sort of thing turns you right off this film is still very enjoyable with some very sweet and funny moments. Ethan Embury's standout performance as the permanently stoned Mark is a treat and the sense of community I got from the story is very heartening.
This is one of the best films I have ever seen, it is a real feel good movie. If you have never seen it and you are in to Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Clerks etc this is in that catagory of awesome cult film. I LOVE IT:

This film does not get old, even after seeing it well over 50 times. It's not hugely based on plot, but more on the characters involved... It's about the lives of a group of employees at a Record Shop, and their Boss Joe, who's trying to save the place from being taken overy. Lucas lost all of Joe's money, A.J must confess his love to Cory by 1.37pm exactly, Cory is about to throw herself at Rex Manning (the sleazy pop singer who's doing signings in their store for the day). Gina has a tendency to take all her clothes off at any given moment. Mark wants to start a band... And all of them want to help Joe save the store! Killer dialogue, killer soundtrack... Just watch and enjoy.. You will fall in love with this film.
If you like things with a 'reality' bittersweet edge. Set in a large record store called Empire Records the ensemble cast play the teenage characters who staff the shop. The characters are 3 dimensional with problems attitudes crushes and friendships which really shine on screen. A superb cast really give it their all. Fab soundtrack. The day in the life format works well.
i love this film, its totally
chick flick,
musical and
comedy all squeezed in to 1!!!
empire records rocks my world!!!
On the face of it, this is a film where nothing much happens. But in another way, it records an extraordinary day in the life of a record shop owner and his employees. I love this movie because all the characters are 'real', the dialogue is fresh and the situations are lively. Early appearances by Rene Zellweger and Liv Tyler certainly help keep the attention on the screen but Anthony La Paglia is quite simply charismatic in his role and the soundtrack is very very good.
This is a simple film but it works because it is a joyful movie mostly and if you enter into the spirit of it, it carries you away on a wave of just willing everything to come good at the end. The plot concerns a record shop owner's efforts to keep his shop independent and stop a sellout to a major chain. It starts from there and the story develops into something quite altogether different from the film you expect.
You'll get a bonus point for spotting an early Tobey Maguire appearance.
Empire Records is a great film. If you're twelve. I discovered this showing my childhood favourite teen angst flick to my 28 year old boyfriend, who branded it 'painful'. Okay, maybe he has a point - it's kind of lost something now that I'm not a kid, longing for a place to fit, aching for AJ to tell me he loves me at 1:37pm, wishing to work somewhere as awesome as Empire Records instead of Subway.
That being said, I still hold a guilty love for this over-the-top, hyperreal, romantic film, and the oddball characters with their over-written one liners. Have a few drinks, watch, and pretend you're a teenager once again!
(Just to reiterate, if you didn't enjoy this film when you were younger, I highly doubt you will like it as an adult!)
this didn't live up to the description and was pretty appalling - only watchable for Liv Tyler, who is always delicious and believable, and Renee Zellweiger (though not quite in her league) - perhaps an attempt to make another 'Breakfast Club'- type classic but too weak, silly and generally naff casting/acting/plot/script (some of the music tracks made it almost bearable though)
Sorry folks!
