Stunning Performances
By Hugo Hudson from London , 04 Jul 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
An epic of the scale of Schindler's List, this film is a roller-coaster of emotion throughout, dealing with Japanese occupation in China during WWII. As only Spielberg can do, it both makes you cry and at times makes you laugh out loud. All the characters are exceptional, you'll come to love them all, though I think none so much as Jim, played in a the most astonishingly believable manner by a very young Christian Bale. An absolute must-watch, this is one of my favourite films.- Was this review helpful to you?

(89)A moving, historical film
By a customer , 03 Apr 2013I am not over generous with reviews, but this is 4.5* material. The insight, through the perspective of a very young Christian Bale, of an invasion during war and the loss of a privileged background is moving. There is a reason this film is so famous.- Was this review helpful to you?

Breathtaking- a must watch film
By zeep2k (35 reviews) from Merseyside , 08 Feb 2013Empire of the sun is an unusual take on a war film. Bale has a commanding performance for such a young actor at the time, and works well with Malkovich. It's a heart-wrenching tale of the true story of the Japanese occupation of China. It will leave you speechless.- Was this review helpful to you?

Unusual war film
By Kat_68 (3 reviews) , 08 Feb 2013This film shows the war from a different angle to the one we are used to. Christian Bale is impressive considering his young age and the fact that he is in almost every scene. This is a story of survival and care for one's fellow humans. A very enjoyable film.- Was this review helpful to you?
