Disney winningly sends up its own back-catalogue.

In the animated musical fairytale kingdom of Andalasia Giselle lands in the arms of handsome prince Edward. Evil queen Narissa, Edward's stepmother, knowing their happily ever after will loosen her grip on power, banishes Giselle to a strange and scary other world- live-action New York.

Enchanted is a sly spoof of, and homage to, Disney's fairy tales especially the instant classics of the studio's second golden age- The Little Mermaid to Aladdin years. It's a straight-faced fantasy-comedy reminiscent of Men in Black and The Addam's Family and the director behind those uneven but perfectly presented franchises, Barry Sonnenfeld, is a producer here. Billy Kelly's witty script and Kevin Lima's confident direction deserve credit of course but Sonnenfeld's influence is palpable.

Central to Enchanted's success is the wonderfully committed Amy Adams as guileless Giselle, wide-eyed, charming and, indeed, animated. It's the sort of bravura comedy turn that can make a film on its own like Christina Ricci's Wednesday Addams or Johnny Depp's Captain Jack. The rest of the cast follows Adams' formidable example- James Marsden's Edward is handsome, dashing and dumb as a stump, hilariously conceited and oblivious to the strictures of reality. Timothy Spall, as his treacherous assistant who ends up calling a radio shrink, and Susan Sarandon as Narissa might have been better used though Sarandon clearly has a ball in her too few scenes. Patrick Dempsey drew the short straw as the straight man Robert, the big hearted lawyer (well- it is a fantasy) who takes Giselle in, but makes an impression anyway- when Giselle starts singing about true love in Central Park he accepts it as another sign that she's touched. When others join in, starting with some buskers and finishing with what seems like half the population of Manhattan, Robert's reaction is cherishable- either he's going nuts or everyone else is and he doesn't like the odds.

There are only a couple of songs (well- two and a half) but they are highlights- fine musical pastiches as you would expect from Alan Menken, a creative force behind the Disney films cited earlier, here working with Stephen Schwartz. Giselle's trilling of a few notes from a window summons willing animals to help with some housework. The motley assembly of pigeons, rats and cockroaches is not quite what she was expecting but they set to anyway and Cleaning Crud up in the Kitchen is just as catchy as Whistle While You Work and much funnier. The mickey-taking show-stopper in Central Park is simultaneously as unabashedly joyous as anything Disney has ever done which is quite an achievement and sums up Enchanted perfectly.

Do take my enthusiastic rating in context for I do love Disney's other animated musicals but this is an exhilarating tonic, a great children's film for adults and (sorry but it's true) utterly enchanting. Let's hope no pallid, money driven, committee designed sequel is in the works

    Never Again

I was looking forward to watching this movie i adore disney moives but this for me was a real let down. From the moment it started the leading lady bugged the heck out of me i'm not even sure why i just didn't take to her and really didn't like her. I thought the story was nice and also it was lovely to see the girl from th musical Wicked in the role as Nancy the real pity is she didn't get to sing (She has a fab voice)

All in all this movie was a real let down for me.

    Endulging your inner child....

I heard about this film from a friend who dragged her boyfriend to the pictures to watch it, when it first came out. Didn't really sound like it was up my street, but I did promise to watch it one day...

Well that day came & to be honest I was completely mesmerised by the whole picture. The colours, the songs everything just transported me back to my childhood. So easy to watch compared to many kids films nowadays.

I would reccommend this to anyone who likes a light hearted feel-good comedy & all round fairytale- you won't be dissapointed! :)

Fun blend of fairytale animation and real life

I could'nt agree more with another reviewer, it does take a while to become totally enchanted with this, the first 15 minutes are very samey bog standard fare, completely snow white and cinderella, and they do leave you thinking is this just a mixed up re-hash. Then the story clicks into alternately real life, and animation, and it does come into its own. Although there is nothing stunningly new in the plot department (beautiful princess, wicked hag, handsome prince(s), poisoned apples) it does have the charm and endearing Disney stamp that weave a sort of transfixing magic on kids and adults that the studios have made an artform. All in all after the opening I thoroughly enjoyed this, not Disneys best by far, but still a lovely piece of imagineering by the ones who do it best. Definately worth a watch.

    Singing was lovely

I love kids movies/animation but I found this one quite disappointing, the singing was lovely though.

    Excellent

Took my daughter to see this over xmas period, and i did go dragging my heels as she really wanted to see this, so went along with it!!

WoW im so glad i did, it was an excellent fairytale with a modern twist. And if i can ad, what kept me awake in this film was the eye candy in the form of Patrick Dempsey. Have not seen him in a film since can't buy me love as the geeky lawnmower man...and WOW...when did he grow up so handsome!!! Could not take my eyes off him, hes my new Brad Pitt.....

anyway the film.....yes it's a must, normally i see with kids i doze off after 20 mins but stayed awake throughout, maybe that was patricks fault..yummmmy

    Could Have Been Better

Enchanted is not to be confused with the typical disney / rom com idea. It takes all of the typical disney ideals, places tongue firmly in cheek, and then proceeds to parody them quite well. Although the film's fun-poking sort of flops toward the end, as is abandonned in favour of jumping on the typical, predictable rom-com band-waggon, for the first half of the film it manages to be very funny, and also quite sweet at times.

Amy Adams is brilliant in this movie! Her character's naive and overly sweet outlook and her every movement oozes with 'disney princess' magic. From her prancing to her dilliberately overplayed expressions, Adams simply makes this film worth watching. James Marsden is also well worth a mention, but I feel that they could have done a lot more with his brash, egotistic character. I thought they were going to slowly transform the prince into a junk-food eating, televission adict who only cares about Ricci Lake and Hotdogs, but alas, I was let down.

Worth seeing the first half if you're a cynic like me, or the second half, if you're a romantic like most of the girls I've been out with.
