Vaguely interesting for causing controversy at the time, this tacky tale of illicit teenage romance hasn't aged particularly well. Martin Hewitt and Brooke Shields are the mismatched youngsters who fall in love, much to the disapproval of the latter's father (Don Murray). Director Franco Zeffirelli, who had a hit with his notorious 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, brings a modicum of class and style to the affair, but not enough to overcome the cloying sentimentality on show. Hewitt fares better than Shields in the lead role but, ultimately, it was another teenager who made the most of this break: Tom Cruise, here making his feature debut.
Overheated melodrama with unbelievable and unlikeable characters. Why this director should choose to make it is mysterious.
The eighties was a great time for teen movies - the collected works of John Hughes and others prove immensely popular to this day. Endless Love however is different to all the rest. In which other film do you find underage sex (Broooke Shields plays a 15 year old) and a boyfriend who loves a girl so much he burns her house down just to rescue her family to prove to them how much he loves her! And then he ends up in a mental asylum as a result! This film breaks conventions, and is quite beautiful to look at, even if some will find it a little bizarre. By the way, the BBFC cuts all references to underage sex from porn movies so it always amazed me that they allowed this film (even if tastefully done) to suggest that a 15 year old could be having sex!!
very good film. watched it yrs ago. still loved it
As Brooke Shields knows all too well, new father Tom Cruise doesn't spend all his time playing happy families and being Mr Nice Guy. In addition to doting on newly-born daughter Suri and his actress wife Katie Holmes, Cruise also spends his time engaging with his pseudo-religion of scientology – to the detriment of Shields. The 41-year-old star of The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love was criticised by Cruise last year for using post-natal anti-depressant drugs. He argued that she should have... Read more
