Ok so its a documentary. Its not march of the penguins and you would have to have been living on the moon to not know who Ernest Shacklton is.

That being said this is well worth a viewing. There are some amazing photo's from the actual journey and the actual tale of Shacklton and his mens strength of will to keep going makes Touching the Void look like the sort of thing they would do for fun.

It is people like Shacklton who we should hold up as our greatest hero. True nobility of spirit comes from a mans concern for others and the level to which he will risk his own life for others. Shacklton must therefore be one of the bravest and most noble men to ever grace this planet.

You could not make up the things these men put themselfs through but to give you an idea, how do you feel about spending two years in sub-zero temperatures (down to -40) with 1900's clothing, while living under an up-turned boat. Then finish your trip off with a sale across the wildest expanse of ocean in the world in an open row boat and then traverse an uncharted glacial covered island interror before making it to safety. Then return to the antartic to save the rest of your men. Then sale back to good old blighty in time to sign up for WW1 so most of you can get your heads blown off in a mud filled trench. No, just go back to bitching about how hard it is to get the microwavable Pizza out of the box.............

A fantastic documentary with some awesome original footage, and stills, interspersed with modern color film of this barren yet beautiful wilderness. Shackleton's leadership qualities and the sheer determination to survive of his fellow adventurers are apparent throughout. Brilliantly done, well worth seeing.

i wanted to see this film because having read RolandHuntfords biography of Shackelton and been to South Georgia where we stood at Shackeltons grave and subsequently gone on to Antarctica it meant a lot to me! I wasnt disappointed! It is a truly superb docu drama with wonderful original film and photographs! What a brave man he was! The film captures his character and spirit in a way recreations never do! A must see!

    Brilliant film/documentary.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a factual account of this voyage. The photography and 'video' clips are remarkable. This man was a true hero who, sadly, was born at the wrong time.

  • Amazing survival story

This actually packs more of a punch than the Kenneth Brannagh, Shackleton (which is worth watching but a bit slow in place, and needed some pruning in the editing, and needs to be watched over 2 to 3 bites). Of Shackleton and Endurance, I would pick Endurance. We actually enjoyed watching the film and the documentary one after the other (Shackleton first with the documentary to put flesh on the bones of the story).

The determination and leadership capabilties of Shackleton is truly incredible. Survival on the ice, open boat journeys, mountains. The dedication that Shackleton shows to keep his men alive is incredible. The endurance of the crew is fantastic. An excellent film to watch if you think your life is not going as it should or you think your life is a bit difficult. It will help you keep going. Really nicely put together. The exrtras are good too so don't forget to watch those as well.

    I rate this 3.5.
