    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is cracking world war II film with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens. Good old Robert is in charge of a destroyer while Curt is the U-boat captain. This is not the boring old world war film where America saves the day. This is a battle of wits to the end played by two great actors. Both anticipating each others move, until the end !!! I would say more but it would spoil the fun. Yes it's a old film but it is a good film well worth putting your feet up for 90 mins and just forgetting about the world as it is today.

A warship and a u-boat battle away with the captains trying to out-think the other. Enjoyable with some tense moments and sub-plots.

One of the best submarine movies ever made. It works well because none of the characters are portrayed as war heroes, but simply as men drawn into war and carrying out their jobs to the best of their abilities. The opposing captains, played by Mitchum and Jurgens , are both single-minded, but compassionate men who execute warfare with skill while never losing sight of their humanity. An engaging movie.

I liked this film a lot. I have always enjoyed submarine films and this is a good one. Not the usual jingoistic US war film but one with a positive message. You wont be dissapointed if you rent it
