This is one of the best submarine movies, a stunning drama about a Second World War German U-boat and the US destroyer that's stalking it, whose captains only meet in the final reel. As the respective skippers, Curt Jurgens and, particularly, Robert Mitchum turn in fine performances. The special effects won an Oscar, but it is the direction by former crooner Dick Powell that is really remarkable — his taut handling of the action makes this one of his finest movie achievements. The film was actually based on a real story, written into novel form by wartime submarine captain DA Rayner.

This is cracking world war II film with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens. Good old Robert is in charge of a destroyer while Curt is the U-boat captain. This is not the boring old world war film where America saves the day. This is a battle of wits to the end played by two great actors. Both anticipating each others move, until the end !!! I would say more but it would spoil the fun. Yes it's a old film but it is a good film well worth putting your feet up for 90 mins and just forgetting about the world as it is today.
I liked this film a lot. I have always enjoyed submarine films and this is a good one. Not the usual jingoistic US war film but one with a positive message. You wont be dissapointed if you rent it
