Escaflowne feels like a bit of an epic. This first DVD 'Dragons and Destiny' introduces Hitomi (the main character) who reads tarot cards which come to life. A good mix of action and mystery, and each episode builds on the former while unravelling some new elements. This DVD contains 4 episodes - I think the entire series runs to 26.
The animation quality itself is quite good although perhaps not as striking as some newer animes.
Escaflowne is a top notch series and one of the reasons of this is that it has excellent pacing. The main benefit of this is no filler episodes are needed making it a great watch from start to finish, no episode feels like it was sacrificed to set up the next episode and something exciting that moves the plot along happens every episode.
Never standing still the story will take you to the far reaches of Gaea as we follow the heroine Hitomi, Vaan King of Fanelia and Alan a renowned knight find their part in a global conflict against and evil empire threatening all life on Gaea.
A review this short can't do justice to such a well written and produced story. Even if your not the kind of person who loves animated series or Anime I'd recommend you give this one a try, you won't regret it.
One thing against the DVD (Which has pretty good content overall) is that the extra commentary bits by the cast advise that you have seen the entire series first to avoid spoilers. This is a minor complaint against an overall excellent product as the feature was obviously intended for people who own the DVD and not who rented it.
