The Escaflowne anime series follows the exploits of a young schoolgirl, Hitomi Konzaki, who is an ordinary enough high school student until a column of light transports her to a strange world called Gaea. Hitomi aligns herself with a young knight named Van, whom she saw in a vision prior to being transported. Together they begin a perilous journey with Escaflowne--the legendary god of protection--as they encounter both allies and enemies, most notably the evil empire of Zaibach.
