The Escaflowne anime series follows the exploits of a young schoolgirl, Hitomi Konzaki, who is an ordinary enough high school student until a column of light transports her to a strange world called Gaea. Hitomi aligns herself with a young knight named Van, whom she saw in a vision prior to being transported, and together they begin a perilous journey with Escaflowne, the legendary god of protection. In these episodes, the Zaibach emperor tries to separate Hitomi from Van and the Escaflowne with a particularly devious scheme.

    classic anime

    The story is based loosely on characters intertwined by fate and destiny. Japanese are great with storylines in Anime and this is another example. Its a series though and its recommended you start from the first volume.
