When John Carpenter and Kurt Russell teamed up for this sequel to ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, the idea was to kick butt and have fun. They do just that in ESCAPE FROM L.A., an explosive film that recalls the classic original in all the best ways. Infamous adventurer Snake Plissken gets another raw deal when he is forced to rescue the President's daughter from the new prison island of Los Angeles. Mayhem ensues as Snake goes about his mission, leaving a wake of destruction behind him. Lighter and more tongue in cheek than the original, ESCAPE FROM L.A. provides loud, violent fun for both the fans of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK as well as newcomers to the films. There are great cameos provided by Peter Fonda, Bruce Campbell, Pam Grier and many more that give the film an extra layer of entertainment. Great special effects are a given in Carpenter films, and this one is no exception. ESCAPE FROM L.A. is fun fare from a master filmmaker.

Working from the book by Richard Rashke, this is a compelling account of the escape from a Nazi death camp deep in the Polish countryside, concocted by a cabal of Jewish workers and Soviet soldiers. Over 250,000 million people died in the Sobibor gas chambers. In comparative terms, the fact that over 300 prisoners fled from this hellhole may seem slight. But their achievement remains one of the most audacious acts of courage in the entire Second World War. Alan Arkin is excellent as ringleader Leon Feldhendler, while Rutger Hauer and Joanna Pacula head a superb ensemble cast. But the key component is Jack Gold's directorial restraint and the film was deservedly rewarded with two Golden Globes.
No more than a weary rehash of Carpenter's Escape from New York; the plot has aged in the 15-year gap between the two movies, and one might have hoped that its star and director would have moved on to something less stale.
This film is not a patch on the original Escape:-( Acting is dire, plot is dire and the effects are beyond belief in their style and presentation.
Sadly a case of making a sequel just becuase they could and were probably short of ideas for a good film.
Worth a watch after a few beers maybe and thats about it
