Most helpful review Escape From Sobibor

  • Worth watching but overlong and not quite good enough to do justice to this heroic true story

A difficult film to review for a variety of reasons.

It is a true story and one worth telling. It has a reasonable cast who put a lot into their roles. It does have moments of tension and nail-biting. It has a genuine 'feel' of a holocaust film, which many others don't always seem to achieve.

On the negative side, it is too long at two and a half hours. It's one thing to see an epic star-studded classic like The Great Escape holding the viewers' attention for every minute of its 3 hours ( not that I compare the 2 films except in respect of mentioning length); but it's quite a different matter to maintain a low-cast, low production film such as 'Escape From Sobibor' for nearly as long-----as a documentary of what happened that sort of length might be allowable, but not as a feature film that has to entertain and hold the viewers' complete attention.

I think it is the length of the film that ultimately spoils its capacity to be a really excellent film in my view. While the story is memorable, the film is not......if that does not sound too paradoxical.

Worth watching, always worth remembering and paying tribute to victims of The Holocaust. But as a piece of cinema, I cannot say that it is anything but average.

May be well intentioned, but the truth and horror of this story deserves better. Dreadful acting and direction...you'd think they were all on a picnic.

Good film and interesting. A bit dated As it was filmed many years ago but worth watching. The acting was good and overall it was informative

  • Great stories are more important than great films.

This may appear to be melodramatic and over the top in places to viewers who do not know very much about the death camps, but if anything it was quite tame compared to what really happened. This is a made for TV film and there is no way a bloody and gory version would be allowed to be made (not even considering the extra costs that would create). Thanks to CBS for making this. This was far more truthful with less obvious tugging at the emotions than Schindler's List.

Anyone interested in seeing what happened at Sobibor's big sister camp, Treblinka and its revolt, should read Jean Francois Steiner. That is harrowing and not something I would want my grandmother or mother to read or watch on TV.
