Although Etta is not my favourite singer; I'm more of an Ella man myself, no one can fail to be entertained by this spirited entertainer. The natural talent is clear. Nobody is taught to sing in this way.

Many tracks bring back memories of Sophie Tucker with a raw swinging style all of Etta's own. There are idiosyncratic renditions of 'At Last' & 'My Funny Valentine', but better by far are the real bluesy numbers like 'You can leave your hat on' & 'Sugar on the Floor', which are just so full of emotion. This singer gives that in bucket loads!!

She is well supported too, by a great backing band, with a driving R&B sound, that I could listen to on their own.

i have been a fan of etta james for more years than i care to remember and this was not her at her best.avoiding the high notes and unable to get off her stool the only saving grace was the band-hence the two stars.fans, dont bother.listen to her records instead
