    Excellent performance, minimalist staging

In this DVD PI Tchaikovsky's opera is splendidly performed by the Glyndbourne Festival Opera and the London Philharmonic, under the baton of Andrew Davis.

The staging - as with so many modern productions - is minimalist, as far as scenery and props are concerned. This may not be to your liking. However the costumes are suitably in period.

The DVD is technically excellent, with superb sound and picture, and optional subtitling.

Any opera lover will enjoy an evening with this disc, which is highly recommended.

    Russian Opera

I have never really been grabbed by any Russian opera (odd because I enjoy a lot of Tchaikovsky's music) but I came closer than ever before with this Glyndbourne production. I personally found the 'minimalist production very effective. The two scenes with just two chairs were both very poignant and all the the dance scenes were very lively. I personally thought Tatyana was excellent. In the letter scene she portrayed all the ups and downs and yet at the end she had changed into the mature woman that she had become. The first scene was fairly mundane but I think that may be more to do with the story. I shall certainly take this out again and hope the music really grabs me then.
